Think people are forgetting if he plays Valencia there are still 1500 points up for grabs! Long long way to go yet! Yes unlikely, but still in his hands

Certainly I'd agree with that, that although it's not looking good and must be odds against reaching the WTF, things can and often have changed very quickly.
The top players like to compete against each other.
And it is not just money. For each round robin match you win, you get 200 points - if somebody wins the whole thing without dropping a match, they earn 1500 points. And these points are on top of their already earned ranking points, meaning they can count 19 tournaments instead of 18. Which can be very handy with regard to seeding in the AO.
It's also in his town of residence, and as a British player that's got to rank very highly. Federer has always targeted it as an event which should be ranked just below a grand slam, so all in all its very important but not a matter of life and death.
If Andy wants to make the WTF he really has to ask for a wild card into either Valencia or Basel.
A French site says (not too surprisingly) that he has been offered a WC for Valencia (and Berdych too) but nothing about whether he'll accept it . . .
Andy in his interview was understandably vague:
When Murray was asked whether he would compete at the Swiss Indoors Basel or Valencia Open 500, he said, "We'll see over the next few days where I decide to go. Hopefully I can play well the last couple of tournaments, [to] try and make a push for London."
Although I might be out of date (these from yesterday) because another site claims he's definitely playing in Valencia . . .

Murray needs to play at the O2 to keep his profile high to protect his 'brand' value as well as his A.O. seeding in January. That's the way it works these days. Missing the end of year spectacle will have potential adverse knock-on effects through 2015.
