RE: Will Andy qualify for the WTF 2014?

Think he'll take the WC into Valencia, unless he scores really big in Shanghai. Let's hope nole has a stinker on the 2nd or 3rd rd.

Berdych hasn't got the easiest of draws either. After a bye in R1, his next two opponents are likely to be Gasquet and Cilic.

Cilic has just been beaten by Karlovic. Not good as I was counting on him to take out Berdy who's close to Andy.

First thing is for somebody to take out Raonic , he is the one directly above Andy in the race.

Yes, but that's the thing, he's got a better draw than Berdy including an injured Rafa in the QFs.

I'd take Gasquet over Gulbis right now, so Raonic's draw is no easy stroll.

True, and he's abit erratic, so here's hoping.

If Gulbis was going to be our saviour then we need to find someone else to pin our hopes on. Youzhny has just beaten Gulbis 6-4 6-1.

Relying on Ernests Gulbis for anything seems to me a bit risky. But Mikhail Youzhny, who has just beaten the aforementioned Mr Gulbis, when he is on a roll can be quite a force ... so maybe hope isn't lost yet.

Mr Nadal appears to be playing with appendicitis, which cannot be helpful. (Note to any medics on the board: is this even remotely safe? Sounds hideously risky) Which means that if neither Mr Monaco or Mr Youzhny can beat Mr Raonic, I'm not too sanguine about anyone stopping his trip to the finals.

This is incredible! makes one question the diagnosis, that even considering playing with it is ridiculous. Years ago they used to call irritable bowel syndrome (with colicky pain) a grumbling appendicitis, however the grumbling appendicitis diagnosis has gone out of the window years ago. One either has acute appendicitis, you need an op asap and you can hardly walk, or the diagnosis is completely mistaken. (I'm a retired nurse, spent some time working with gastro-entorologists).

Raonic retired from his match against Monaco at *2-5 in the first set. If Andy can beat Ferrer tomorrow he will end the week just 5 points off 8th sport in the Race.

Race update at L16 stage in Shanghai :

5 NISHIKORI 4265 ( 4255 + 10 ) - OUT L32 (BYE)
6 CILIC 3990 ( 3980 + 10 ) - OUT L64 - WILL QUALIFY FOR WTF DUE TO US OPEN TITLE
7 BERDYCH 3855 ( 3765 + 90 ) - IN L16 vs KARLOVIC
8 RAONIC 3750 ( 3740 + 10 ) - OUT L32 (BYE)
9 MURRAY 3655 (3565 + 90 ) - IN L16 vs FERRER
10 FERRER 3625 ( 3535 + 90 ) - IN L16 vs MURRAY
11 DIMITROV 3450 ( 3405 + 45 ) - OUT L32

Clearly, in the short term and maybe the longer term the Murray vs Ferrer match could be very important, although the winner is likely to face Djokovic in the QF so the gain / damage may be limited to a further 90 points. Berdych now has a very attractive looking bottom half of the draw ( only other remaining seed is Isner ) and should be favourite to reach the final ( and at least 600 points ).

And as he didn't, his chances of making the O2 will probably be down to hoping for withdrawals!
