None of the race contenders have slipped up yet, so this match will see the first to fall (although it's between the one who's closest to qualifying and the one furthest away).
I see that Nishikori, Berdych, Ferrer and Raonic all won, so it really was Andy clinching his WTF spot himself today with no assistance from anyone else. As Madeline said, extremely satisfying, especially after 11 consecutive wins. It's great how his WTF campaign ( and that's what it's very largely been, Andy ! ) has really galvanised him. We have discussed his focus and he really found focus.
Currently 5th, he can now end the week no lower than 7th and would even move above Wawrinka to 4th if he won the title here. He would be level on points with Wawrinka if he was the losing finalist. All these positions include Rafa.
Berdych has qualified for the WTF after beating Anderson in 3 sets.
We have :
Murray 4475 at QF stage - qualified
Berdych 4465 at SF stage - qualified
Nishikori - 4445 at QF stage - will only not qualify if Raonic beats Ferrer in the final
Cilic - 4150 - feet up - qualified by US Open title
Ferrer - 4045 at QF stage - needs to reach the final or get at least as far as Raonic
Raonic - 4020 at QF stage - needs to get further than Ferrer, winning the fibal if they both reach it
All settled of course if Raonic loses in his current match with Federer, but he has taken the first set on a tiebreak.
So Nishikori and Raonic ( roll up, roll up ! ) are the last two to book their spots, and when the music stopped there was no place for Duracell Dave ( other than as a bystander waiting for someone to fall over ).
