Week 39 - ATP 250 - Shenzhen, China (Hard)

I'd heard rumours that Simon was out for four weeks but he is in the draw as it stands, and in Andy's quarter.

L32: (2) Andy Murray WR 12 v Bye

Projected road to the title:
L16: Xin Gao (CHN) WR 1570 (CH 339 in Oct 2012) or Somdev Devvarman (IND) WR 143 (CH 62 in Jul 2011) (H2H: 1-0)
QF: (5) Gilles Simon (FRA) WR 26 (CH 6 in Jan 2009) (H2H: 12-1) or Lukas Lacko (SVK) WR 84 (CH 44 in Jan 2013) (H2H: 2-0)
SF: (3) Richard Gasquet (FRA) WR 21 (CH 7 in Jul 2007) (H2H: 5-3) or (7) Vasek Pospisil (CAN) WR 43 (CH 25 in Jan 2014)
F: (1) David Ferrer (ESP) WR 5 (CH 3 in Jul 2013) (H2H: 7-5) or (4) Tommy Robredo (ESP) WR 22 (CH 5 in Aug 2008) (H2h: 3-2)

That's quite a nasty line-up for a 250.

That's not that bad a draw, with the French boys the problem.

Well, Simon obviously withdrew from Moselle with a wrist problem so, as Beefy says, I wouldn't count too much on him (although he's got a gritty character - you never can tell).

Gasquet is obviously a little more 'fragile' in general and is coming off a mega high of the Davis Cup (which exorcised a few demons, in a way, for him) so he may well be a bit 'the day after' in his tennis and not too galvanised . . .

I would, CD, be far more sanguine about Mr Murray's chances against an injured M. Simon were the latter not the same person who came off crutches to win a succession of 5 set matches in blazing heat. Remember at the time a bunch of French tweets about his nickname which was a tribute to his indomitability ... can't remember what it was, but you doubtless will.

I'm afraid I don't remember the nickname. He generally gets called 'Gillou' but that's just a normal diminutive. And used to get called 'Le poussin' (because he was a bit puny) but haven;t heard that for a while.

But, yes, I know exactly what you mean, and why in my post I'd said that he's gritty - no, you most certainly can't count on him to do the decent thing and retire or withdraw !

However, presumably a slightly injured Simon is better than a fully fit Simon ? :)

I had a quick look at French tweets about M. Simon at the time, but couldn't see any phrase prevailing. Perhaps your memory might be jogged by a quick review.

Re Andy's future possible opponents, seemingly, Gasquet was supposed to be playing doubles here with Simon but has withdrawn, citing a niggle in his right shoulder .. .

But has been pictured riding around on a bicycle. Admittedly that wouldn't hurt his shoulder but I'm wondering if he withdrew from the doubles just to save himself for singles.

See - all that worry about Simon - he's only gone and lost to Berankis (don;t know if his wrist had anything to do with it, but it can't have helped) - and so, all calm, nothing to worry about :)

I can see why few top players are going for these few 250's before the 500/M combo. Andy has a prospective (!) four matches in four days before Beijing and then Shanghai, which hopefully doesn't prove to be too harmful.

Andy takes the first set 6-3 - two breaks - and will serve first in the second

He looked a bit rusty at first, but some long rallies soon sharpened him up.
