I predict Murray to win in straight sets. He's really starting to play some of his best tennis now and has dropped all the experimenting with his game which held him back so much in Australia.
75% first serves in for his first match is outstanding - top-class serving and shows that all the work Andy's been putting in on his serve is paying off.
I remember that match Andy played in Surbiton - June 2004. It had been so disappointing for Andy as at the end of 2003 he was set to become world junior number 2. Unfortunately due to him having a bipartite knee, that injury flared up and he had to take 6 months off.
Andy had a confident start against Wang - during those 6 months off he'd done a lot of growing and it had paid dividends with his serve. He was serving well, holding his own and then on his serve at 2-3, he moved awkwardly and seemed to tweak something in his knee and had to retire as a precaution really.
Re Mad's inquiry on stagger: Stagger went on holiday for a fortnight, I'll see if his blog's been updated recently, he's probably just snowed under with work
Did anyone see the Wang v Blake match ? I suspect Wang was more used to the courts and conditions having come through qualifying and he caught Blake cold. That often seems to be a reason for a surprise defeat. Blake probably tried to hit Wang off the court and made too many errors - Wang is very fast which probably frustrated Blake. Still, it's a great result for Andy as Blake would have posed lots more problems with his bullet-like serve, stinging groundstrokes and athleticism.
I watched Wang at Wimbledon last year, his major weapons are speed around the court and a good serve. Wang's serve is not the most massive but it's accurate. Wang's groundstrokes shouldn't trouble Murray they are accurate but don't have much pace on them. I reckon Andy will win as one of his big weapons is his return and he should hopefully be able to pick the Wang serve and then once he gets into the rallies he will be favourite. Andy will pose different questions to Wang, as he won't try and hit him off the court like Blake but he'll try and mix things up keeping Wang on the back foot waiting for the opportunity to attack.
Wang didn't come through qualifying, he is marked on the Draw as the last direct acceptance. I read somewhere, I think on MTF during the Blake match, that he had just flown in from Taiwan after playing DC so hopefully he may be feeling a bit tired when he plays Andy! It didn't seem to affect him during the Blake match though.
yes well, i have to say I find that my loyalties are a little bit confused today. I will go for Murray though, of course, in straight sets. Wang is a promising little guy and had a great result in the last round. I actually managed to watch some tennis on my holiday; i found a bar on the beach on koh samet that showed the baghdatis/federer match.
if anyone is up in the uk, roddick just started his match, so i guess murray will be on in an hour or so...he leads 5-2 in the first.
