Katie's round 2, against the top ranked WTA in the draw (just outside 250) will be on Wednesday. Already today though the top two seeds Bellis and Wimbledon champion Ostapenko have crashed out. Katerina Stewart found the 12th seed much easier opposition than Katie B, handing out breadsticks
R2
(9) Anhelina Kalinina (UKR) v (SE) Katie Swan (GBR)
Looking at her record, I didn't personally see all that much question that Stewart is a very strong player and good prospect.
I think we just had a bit of a query earlier about the use of the word "encouraging" for Katie's narrow loss. But the loss as such looked no real concern.
Gabi and partner locked in a battle - lost the first set in a TB, won the second 7-5 . . .
NB also note that Cici Bellis, top seed and fresh from beating Cilbulkova in the adults MD, has lost in the second round of the US Open juniors - it's a strange creature, junior tennis . . .

Bellis impressed in the seniors, but her opponents played very poorly, making her look better than she actually is, and maybe back in juniors the pressure of being expected to breeze through the draw too much.
