RE: Boys & Girls: Canadian Open Junior Championship - Hard - Grade 1 (Week 35)

No joy in the doubles - Maia and Izzy both went out in QF.

A very tight contest goes Gabi's way. Sometimes it pays to do well in doubles in the G1 warm-up, sometimes it doesn't. Izzy benefited at the French from a Special Exempt, but if there are too many candidates for SEs here then the doubles players will lose out

Girls QF

Katie Swan (GBR) v (WC) Charlotte Robillard-Millette (CAN)
(11) Gabriella Taylor (GBR) d. Freya Christie (GBR) 6-3 2-6 7-5

Katie should fly up the rankings and will be close to top 50

Great to see.

And it's as promising in depth in junior girls as I can recall.

If I translated a French tweet correctly Katie lost 7-5 in the third, but did get a Nike contract.

FINAL: Katie Swan (GBR) lost to (2) Elena Gabriela Ruse (ROU) by 3-6 6-4 7-5

Very close and a great week despite the not quite perfect ending!

Katie seems very upbeat despite the narrow loss, buoyed by the Nike contract

Shame she didn't win the title but a great week. Hoping for a good run in the US open too.

Certainly our biggest prospect on the girls side right now

Certainly Katie the one just currently most on the rise and still just 15.

Particularly encouraging, though, is that we have so many prospects just now, with Gabbi, Maia and Freya still just 16.

It is good that there are numbers and hence should be less particular focus on Katie for now.

And having so many fellow Brits at big tournaments should help the environment for them all.
