Boys: Nike Junior Nationals (U12/U14/U16/U18) - Week 34

This year's Nationals began today. Last year's runner-up Ryan Peniston is top seed in the under 18s (eligible despite being a '95, as he has not yet turned 19) with Ewan Moore (winner of 2 Irish G5s recently) seeded 3, but promoted to 2 on the withdrawal of Dan Little.  The under 14s is a strong event with Jake Hersey and Jack Draper as top seeds. The under 12s are in Bournemouth and the rest in Nottingham. Draws:

Enrique Vidal ended Ewan Moore's involvement in the under 18s, though Ewan progressed in the under 16s where he is actually seeded lower. Fourth seed Ewen Lumsden (brother of Maia) lost early in the under 14s.

The first 'doubling-up' casualty is Calum Macgeoch - he retired at 0-1 down from his U16 match as he'd just made the semis in the U18.

Hopefully just a cautionary thing ahead of his semi but it gives his opponent an 'unearned' victory in the U16s (Ben Draper, as it happens) and may well reflect a real niggle/injury.

He'll play Tom Hands, unseeded, who beat Vidal, also unseeded. Ryan Peniston plays Sam Rice in the other semi.

In the U14s, Jake Hersey (the number 1 seed) lost to Aidan McHugh.

edit: for the sake of clarity:

U18 semis:

(1) Ryan Peniston v (wc) Sam Rice

Calum Macgeoch v Tom Hands

Aidan has had a number of good results in Tennis Europe events (won the double last week) so that was a high-powered clash for the quarters. Jack Draper has been untroubled so far

U14 semis

(5) Aidan McHugh v (3) Emile Hudd
(7) Brandon Murphy v (2) Jack Draper

I'm surprised Max Stewart isn't playing this week.

Max is over in Slovenia, for a Grade 4, with a whole heap of others, including Marcus Walters.

Don;t know why - the whole thing doesn't make sense to me . . . but I guess the LTA are happy with it or they'd do something about it.

I am surprised all the funded top players are not playing this week, unless injured it should be a requirement that all players receiving funding should play in their National Event.

This years event is weaker than it's ever been and does not achieve what it is suppose to, by the best players in the country compete to be National champions, how can this happen if so many of the "top" players are allowed to play overseas, or even worse pull out once the draw has been made and ruin the seed balance.

my mind boggles with the LTA at times.

Players I believe should not be allowed to play in two age groups at Nationals. It should be their own age group only and another player would of got the chance.
