RE: Davis Cup 2015 - World Group Round 1 - 6-8 Mar

Err, Scotland will still be part of the UK next year whatever. I believe the initial guesstimate for any Independence Day is in 2016.

Coventry, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow - I think have been used recently for home indoor fixtures.

Glasgow ?  Can't play it outside Great Britain  wink

On a serious note Andy's surprising announcement that he supports Scottish Independence must make it at least possible that in the event of "Yes" winning that he will decline to play Davis Cup for GB again, same goes for Jamie Murray and Colin Fleming both of whom have also said they support Independence.

Personally I wouldn't blame Andy if he ceased playing Davis Cup he has be a one man team for the last five years

If Andy  thinks he has been a one man team for GB, then it will be 10 times worse playing for Scotland.

Scottish no. 2 Cameron Norrie = World 695

I don't think he will play davis cup for Scotland either

Yes I know , and so it would probably be 2017 before they could enter the Davis cup, but do you see Cameron or any other Scottish players breaking into the top 100 or even 200 within the next 2-3 years?

It would be pretty sad and ironic if Kyle say does establish himself in the top 100 and Andy departs for Scotland, or decides he doesn't want to play anymore.

Yes I understand that in the event of Independence Andy will still be entitled to play for GB next year, and probably the year after, but he could feel more than a little awkward doing so and I think you would find that any tie played at an English venue would see luke warm support at best for Andy.

I personally don't see any conflict between Andy (or Jamie/Colin) voting YES and then continuing to represent Team GB if (when) the vote comes out as a NO.

I haven't followed all the INS and outs of the discussions / debates given I was never remotely an undecided so there may be some answer to this.

But Scots currently hold UK passports and are citizens of the UK. I have not heard anything to say we have to give this up on independence and / or what the options are re say making a choice between the two previously non constitutional parts or dual citizenship.

And specifically to Andy, he resides in England with an English girlfriend so I suspect he could play for "GB - Scotland" for as long as he wanted. Though clearly there is a good chance he would opt for Scotland.

I absolutely agree Bob, but as discussed in the referendum thread I think it may have been unwise to have come out publicly, because unfortunately I suspect that some folk will make it an issue. He may need a thick skin.

Neither do I but if the vote is Yes it will be more than a little awkward especially as anti-Scottish sentiment in England will become much more common.

Changing the direction of the thread completely, do you think that Leon might consider throwing what the Americans might call a "curve ball" and playing the tie on Indoor Clay.

Clearly clay is not the favourite surface of the Brits, but is probably an even worse choice for the Americans. A fast indoor hard court would play into the hands of the big serving Isner and Querrey.

Would there also be a psychological advantage having beaten them on clay in the USA. I seem to remember Jim Courier being highly criticised for his choice of surface. Choosing clay might be one more way to rub salt into that wound.

If the Bryan Bros play - and there is no reason to suggest they wouldn't - any GB Nș2, be that Wardy/Evo/Kyle would have to win a rubber. Clay might just be the best option.

Indoor clay is an abomination and more importantly would probably be pretty expensive to put in somewhere for a one off tie.

I would expect a fairly slow hard court, especially as the tie comes just before Indian Wells and Miami.

Yes, that was my first thought. No chance of clay just before Indian Wells and Miami, well not if Andy is playing ( even though USA did choose last year to show what a fine choice clay could be for GB )

Slowish hard court does seem the way to go.

The key to beating the Americans is finding the place in Britain that would provide the biggest culture shock to the Americans, in being so far away from your typical Western diet and climate, in which case we would probably win.

Is it only me ? I'm stunned that Andy has the cheek to big up Scottish independence when he has been funded by the lta all his tennis playing life and is probably still funded (dont they pay for some of his staff?),he lives in London and also his partner is English ! Talk about having your cake and eating it !!!!!

Well it's certainly not me, and I'm a NO supporter.

There are a huge amount of factors for most Scots to consider regarding independence.

As of now, the LTA is the British tennis organisation. Andy is a British tennis player. The fact that he has been helped and funded by the LTA is both obviously the case and irrelevant to the general question of independence ( what Scottish tennis body would emerge may be a tennis concern, but that's another matter ). The fact that he lives in London with an English partner is their business.

Sorry, but in my opinion that's a load of confused nonsense.
