Davis Cup 2015 - World Group Round 1 - 6-8 Mar

We won't find out our R1 opponents until September, but the teams we could meet are gradually getting narrowed down. So here is a list of who could still be in the World Group next year and whether we would be home or away against them.

The teams are listed in current ranking order, though that will of course change before the 2015 World Group draw, with points for WGPO wins getting added and points from previous September ties getting deweighted.

1 CZE (definitely 2015 WG) - we would play them at HOME
2 SRB (WGPO away v IND) - we would play them AWAY
3 ESP (WGPO away v BRA) - we would play them AWAY
4 ARG (WGPO away v ISR) - we would play them at HOME
5 FRA (definitely 2015 WG) - we would play them at HOME
6 ITA (definitely 2015 WG) - we would play them at HOME
7 SUI (definitely 2015 WG) - we would play them at HOME
8 CAN (WGPO home v COL) - venue would be decided BY LOT
9 USA (WGPO home v SVK) - we would play them at HOME
10 KAZ (definitely 2015 WG) - venue would be decided BY LOT
11 GBR (definitely 2015 WG)
12 GER (definitely 2015 WG) - we would play them at HOME
13 JPN (definitely 2015 WG) - venue would be decided BY LOT
14 AUS (WGPO home v UZB) - we would play them at HOME
15 CRO (WGPO away v NED) - we would play them at HOME
16 BEL (WGPO away v UKR) - we would play them AWAY
17 NED (WGPO home v CRO) - we would play them AWAY
18 UKR (WGPO home v BEL) - we would play them AWAY
19 ISR (WGPO home v ARG) - we would play them AWAY
20 BRA (WGPO home v ESP) - venue would be decided BY LOT
22 SVK (WGPO away v USA) - we would play them AWAY
23 IND (WGPO home v SRB) - we would play them AWAY
24 UZB (WGPO away v AUS) - venue would be decided BY LOT
26 COL (WGPO away v CAN) - venue would be decided BY LOT

In today's new DC rankings, we are unchanged at no. 11, though our points total has dropped by 200 and will fall by another 378.12 in September, when the September 2011 win v Hungary and the September 2013 win v Croatia get deweighted.

All of this means that we almost certainly won't be seeded next year unless a lot of seeded teams lose in the playoffs, so it currently seems more likely that we will have to play a higher-ranked team in R1. Obviously we could play anyone in the list if we get past R1 again though.

5 FRA - we would play them at HOME
6 ITA - we would play them at HOME
7 SUI - we would play them at HOME
8 CAN - venue would be decided BY LOT
9 USA - we would play them at HOME
10 KAZ - venue would be decided BY LOT
11 GBR
12 GER - we would play them at HOME
13 JPN - venue would be decided BY LOT
14 AUS - we would play them at HOME

As our Brazilian correspondent advised, Brazil beat Spain. Also Argentina beat Israel.

A pity Serbia scraped through against India this morning. 2nd post updated accordingly.

GB remain 11th in the new DC rankings at www.daviscup.com/en/rankings/current-rankings.aspx and hence, as expected, won't be seeded.

Possible World Group R1 opponents, with seedings, are:

We would be at home to any of: (1) France, (2) Switzerland, (3) Czech Republic, (5) Argentina, (6) Italy or (7) USA

We would be away to (4) Serbia

If we drew (8) Canada, the venue would be decided by lot

With the possible exception of Canada away, I fear that first tie will be without Andy Murray. I can't see how the schedule works for him next year, and I can't see him flying across the world before the 2 masters tourneys in the US.
I think he'll probably be focussing 100% on his ranking next year.
He may play the next rounds as they're scheduled after wimby/us open respectively

Don't forget that Indian Wells doesn't start till the Thursday and with Andy almost certain to be seeded he won't play there until the Saturday at least. That gives him 5 full days to fly out there and get used to the conditions.

I'd expect Andy to play the Davis Cup first round.

It appears we are either going to be at home or in Canada or Serbia, so Serbia is the most out of the way it gets prior to Indian Wells, with pretty much a week in between ( the surface in Serbia might be more of an issue, but then would Novak want clay of he was playing ? ).

A hard court Davis Cup tie just then might even be decent warm up.

GB's route to the title:

R1: (7) USA (H)

QF: (1) FRA (H) or GER (H)

SF: (3) CZE (H) or (6) ITA (H) or AUS (H) or KAZ (lot)

FINAL: (2) SUI (H) or (4) SRB (A) or (5) ARG (H) or (8) CAN (lot) or BEL (A) or CRO (H) or BRA (lot) or JPN (lot)

So if GB get their act together, they could make the Final without having to play away from home - a once in a (very long time) chance ...

I wonder where they will play it. Any rumours?

Coventry, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow - I think have been used recently for home indoor fixtures.

On a serious note Andy's surprising announcement that he supports Scottish Independence must make it at least possible that in the event of "Yes" winning that he will decline to play Davis Cup for GB again, same goes for Jamie Murray and Colin Fleming both of whom have also said they support Independence.

Personally I wouldn't blame Andy if he ceased playing Davis Cup he has be a one man team for the last five years

If Andy  thinks he has been a one man team for GB, then it will be 10 times worse playing for Scotland.

Scottish no. 2 Cameron Norrie = World 695
