Here's a novelty - a Brit playing in an American closed championship. The organisers have discretion to allow a national from another country under certain conditions (I think Katie will be debarred from the European championships, but we are only allowed two entries in each age bracket for those anyway), and I imagine Katie's US residency will have been an instrumental factor.
Good start from Katie who again is being supervised by Rob Smith, who provides his usual extensive blog at itc-tennis.com/category/blog Her opponent was lowly ranked, but that was probably misleading, as she only plays a small number of high grade tournaments with the occasional good scalp. Just doubles today where she has partnered fast rising Usue Arconada as top seeds
R1 (L64)
(11) Katie Swan (GBR) d. Alexandra Letzt (USA) 6-2 6-4
A disappointing loss in doubles for Katie, but her singles today looks as if it should be comfortable on paper. The higher ranking points only come in to play if Katie reaches the final, which is a big ask.
Just having a look at the range and totals of Katie's singles and doubles counting scores, her doubles may not be great but it does appear to be relatively not bad especially bearing in mind that singles scores for the same round reached are a bit higher than doubles scores even before the doubles divisor is applied.
Her total singles score is 245 and doubles score is 180 with a ranking score of :
Very straightforward, as expected - see Rob's blog for the details/mid-air action photo Katie should be on court at present for a much tougher looking match, which she needs to win to gain any ranking points
R2
(11) Katie Swan (GBR) d. Karina Traxler (USA) 6-0 6-1
Think the decimal places are a hangover from the conversion process when they combined the separate singles and doubles rankings a few years ago to give one overall ranking
Full report on Rob's blog: "I was really proud of how Katie handled the situation as she was not only fighting her opponent, but also the heat and humidity and she did it all extremely well to record her first victory over a top 75 player." He won't be blogging further though as he is flying back to the UK for the London Marathon.
A good opportunity for Katie to advance further seemingly, against a player taking part in only her second ITF event, though she did double bagel another rookie to reach this stage. They play around 9pm BST
