Well that was torture. I did watch the entire match: I'm not sure whether that proves me to be a dedicated Andy fan or an idiot - quite probably both. I don't remember seeing him play so badly and still win in the 9 years I have been watching him.
Veseley does look a good prospect. He doesn't seem to have much in the way of weaknesses, except for the propensity to double fault, for which I should think Andy is very grateful. On the other hand I'm not sure if he looked better than he was because Andy was so bad!
I went out at a set and 1-2 down, came back fully expecting Andy to have lost the whole thing, so now pleasantly surprised that he's through, - without the agony of watching/listening to a painful match. Heard a little of the beginning on Five live extra.
He has at least one more match to work on err apparently rather a lot.
He's a step closer to being ranked at least WR 5 after IW, which with Ferrer's possible non participation in Miami could see him as a top 4 seed there.
And he has recovered from shockers quite quickly in the past.
What's the situation with WR 5 at the minute? I'm guessing that if Andy gets to the QFs and Roger doesn't get to the Final, then he's going to be WR 5? Although, Andy is defending maximum points in Miami, which is always worrying.
Just seen that Nadal has gone out to Dolgopolov. If Andy can get through against Raonic (and from what I've read here that's a big "if") he will have an easier QF than expected.
Neil Harman's report in the Times is enlightening. Has a 1-2 record against Raonic, so really needs to pull his socks up to go any further.
Don't remember the details of all of those matches, but one of the defeats was Barcelona on the clay in 2012. Remember it well because it was the QF and I had tickets for the SF and Final
Now that Nadal's out I hope Murray at least gets to the semi-final. He never seems to have done well here before, apart from losing to Nadal as finalist in a very windy match, where he just didn't cope with the weather.
Hope he can get past raonic. To be fair to Andy he tends to up his game against tougher opposition. Dolgopolov won't be a pushover though. Reached the final and semi of last 2 500s
