Çağla's having a cracking tie, credit to her. (Edit: Turkish symbols a bit ambitious for ActiveBoard, let's call it Cagla)

Hope for better tomorrow, and some mathematical gymnastics to scrape us through.

Çağla sounds like the name of an android - no wonder Hev lost

So a 3-0 win will be enough?

A 2-1 win, will be down to sets won?

So with Anna and Jos winning in 2 sets this is (I think) the score in sets:

Ukraine 11-3 = +8

GB 9-4 = +5

Turkey 6-8 = -2

So best Turkey can do is win by 6 sets to 0 tomorrow to get to +4. Not good enough

GB best Ukraine 3 matches to 0. GB win group.

GB beat Ukraine by 2 matches to 1 AND by 2 sets or better over the 3 matches then GB win group.

So scores in sets    2-0, 2-0, 0-2  OK,     2-0, 2-1, 1-2  OK   2-1, 2-1, 1-2 Not OK     2-0, 2-1 , 0-2 Not OK

I'm very surprised Turkey fielded such a weak doubles team. Odd move.

Today is so deflating but ultimately nothing changes, lose tomorrow and we are out.

Not pointing fingers but GB fields its top team and we get convincingly beaten by Turkey ???? . . . . it's not a great day, is it ?

Good stuff, Joss and Anna, and sorry for my speculation re splitting you two up! I reckon you both may have work to do vs Ukraine.

Yes, looks like we could be heading for sets ( if GB win 2-1 and Turkey win 3-0 )

2-1 2-1 1-2 doesn't give the apparent required 2 set margin, 2-0 2-1 1-2 would :)

We shouldn't be losing ties like that, at the end of the day. Two poor losses and an expected win (still, well done Rae and Smith).

Not sure who you are thinking fingers should maybe be pointed at, CD ? ( even if you are not doing so :) )

Prep appears to be usually good for Fed Cup, team deployment was no surprise. On the day it appears our two singles players didn't play to their best, but I would imagine not for the want of trying.

The likely line-up for tomorrow (given that both GBR and UKR fielded the same players today and yesterday):

Johanna Konta WR 145 v Lesya Tsurenko (UKR) WR 92 (CH 60 in 2013) *
Heather Watson WR 38 v Elina Svitolina (UKR) WR 26 (= CH)
Jocelyn Rae/Anna Smith CR 192 (96+96) v Olga Savchuk/Lesya Tsurenko (UKR) CR 617 (57+560)

* H2H 0-1 but very close (7-5 in the 3rd), Brisbane 2013

Well that didn't go to the script ! Apart from obviously the doubles, and the more I watch Anna/ Joss the more I'm certain they will at least be top 50.

Jo didn't play well, but she still should have won the 2nd set. Why did the Turks not play the youngster yesterday ! The Turkish girl hit way more winners than Jo.
Hev just looked flat. Nerves or lack of energy ? Rolling in her 1st serve on too many occasions. Slice was impressive again. But she fought to the bitter end as she always does. CB playing top 75 level at the moment.

Still got it in us to do something tomorrow, but we'll have to up it.

I'm not sure either. Honestly. But there's only one national team competition in the calendar. Where you aim, as a federation, to peak and perform your best. And today we really SO didn't.

Not wanting to make an issue out of it (may be completely history and irrelevant tomorrow). But I don't accept that our two best players 'just played below their best'. I would hope that the powers that be try and analyse what went wrong and where.
