The first major event for under 14s is this week's Category 1 Teen Tennis in Bolton, acting as a warm-up for Les Petits As next week. It wasn't a successful event for the boys, with only Jack Draper and Brandon Murphy making the last 16, but in the girls event Alexandra Hunter reached the quarters and Ali Collins has gone one better reaching the semi, and the pair have reached the doubles final. Ali has yet to drop a set , and had a splendid win today over the touted American second seed Claire Liu. In the semis she is up against the Canadian who narrowly ended Alexandra's run 6-4 in the third
Can I ask a silly question, but I assumed by the name that Tennis Europe comps were exclusive to Europeans. I assume that's not the case.
No, they're only European in the sense that they are held in Europe (and places that aren't in Europe but count as if they are) and contribute to a specific set of rankings. Given that they are aimed at players aged under 16, the vast majority of the entrants are European, but the non-Europeans tend to be very good, e.g. top young Americans who have moved to Europe to train. Indeed, the top boy and girl in the current Tennis Europe 16U rankings are both Americans - Stefan Kozlov and Tornado Black.

I don't know. They two I've mentioned may even train in the US and just have played the odd TE tournament when over in Europe for ITFs or senior events and done extremely well in them. The "e.g." was just to give an example of why non-Europeans might play in Europe a lot.

Ali suffered at Canadian hands in both singles and doubles today
Girls SF
Maria Tanasescu (CAN) d. (11) Ali Collins (GBR) 6-3 7-6(6)
The reason why the Tennis Europe Under 16 rankings have Americans at number 1 is because they include points gained in ITF tournaments (and Pro tournaments if relevant). Neither Kozlov nor Black has played a Tennis Europe event in the last year (but did the year before). Under 14 rankings are solely based on Tennis Europe events, so although non-Europeans are included if they choose to play (and several come over in January and July usually), they rarely feature high up

Thanks for clarifying. I should have known to just leave you to explain in the first place That seems quite a bizarre system - I mean, I can see why it makes sense to include ITFs and pro tournaments in order to make the rankings more accurate (I've often thought the ITF junior rankings should allow for pro tournaments in some way) but in that case, why include some non-Europeans in the 16U rankings and not others ... or is it specifically just those who have played TE events in less than 2 years ago?

To be included in the Tennis Europe rankings, I believe that at some point you have to have registered a Tennis Europe Player Account (their version of IPIN). After that, as long as you are within the age boundaries, all results from TE, ITF junior and pro events are computed into your 16&U TE ranking. A player has to have actually played TE events to be included in the 14&U rankings.
The main draw of Les Petits As starts tomorrow. Several Brits were in qualifying, including Jack Draper, Eliz Maloney, Kira Reuter, Lauren Armstrong and Alexandra Hunter, but the only one to survive was Emile Hudd. The ? against his opponent indicates that he is seeded, judging from place in the draw, but the host website doesn't at present have the seeding information, whilst TE doesn't even have the draw yet.
