Qualifying has started, and unfortunately concluded early, for the 2 British representatives. Rhett Purcell had the misfortune to draw the top seed, narrowly losing 4-6 7-5 6-0 whilst Megan Rogers lost her opener 6-1 6-2. Interest therefore rests with the 4 girls in as direct acceptances (Katie Boulter, Isabelle Wallace, Freya Christie and Emily Arbuthnott)
To articulate that a bit more clearlynot such kind draws really for all but Katie.
Top half of draw
R1: Isabelle WALLACE v Priscilla HON (AUS) 12 (if she can overcome Hon & get through another match then 5th seeded Xu from China will probs await in R3)
R1: Emily Arbuthnott v Kimberly BIRRELL (AUS) (winner likely to face 3rd seed Kalinina in R2)
Bottom half of draw
R1: Freya CHRISTIE v Lizette CABRERA (winner likely to face 4th seed Kulichkova in R2)
R1: Katie BOULTER 9 v Dhruthi TATACHAR VENUGOPAL (IND) (7th seed Sun from China is the likely R3 opponent)
Is it my imagination or does the AO juniors field seem much weaker than usual this year? So many of the best juniors seem to have other things to do (like play Rafael Nadal on Rod Laver, for example, or try for another doubles' final) ....
There are 6 of the top 10 ranked boys here, but just 2 of the girls top 10, plus Elizaveta Kulichkova, who is ranked inside 300 WTA and (as mentioned above) a potential second round opponent for Freya. Tough draw for Izzy, average ones for Emily and Freya (tricky beyond round 1), but Katie has a great opportunity to reach round 3 if she has shrugged off her whooping cough.
Freya is second on court 19 whilst Emily is fifth on court 22.
Christie/Ostapenko (GBR/LAT) v McIntyre/Pits (AUS)
Dikosavljevic/Hoang (AUS) v (5) Stollar/Wallace (HUN/GBR)
Arbuthnott/Hauger (GBR/USA) v Cabrera/Hives (AUS)
Arakawa/Yu Ye (JPN/CHN) v (2) Boulter/Jorovic (GBR/SRB)
