Boys & Girls: AGL Loy Yang Traralgon Junior International, Australia - Grade 1 (Weeks 2/3)

A good effort from Rhett Purcell to defeat the second seed in qualifying (ranked inside the top 100) 7-5 in the third to ensure  British representation in the Boys as well as Girls events. Rhett is unlucky, drawing a recent G1 and GA finalist. The trio in the Girls draw should be joined next week by Emily Arbuthnott for the Australian Open. They appear to have avoided the strongest players here.

Boys R1 (L64)

(13) Jumpei Yamasaki (JPN) v (Q) Rhett Purcell (GBR)

Girls R1 (L64)

(12) Isabelle Wallace (GBR) v Yukina Saigo (JPN)

Freya Christie (GBR) v Lizette Cabrera (AUS)

(6) Katie Boulter (GBR) v Ilze Hattingh (RSA)

Great chance for our girls to fly up the rankings in the next few weeks.

All three capable of goods runs, plus Emily as well.

All three girls are seeded in the doubles with non-Brit partners. Freya caught You Xiaodi at a good time in Korea (straight after she had won the doubles and reached the singles semis in Osaka) and won comfortably then. Katie played her opponent (Birrell) in the same tournament and won in 3.

Boys R1 (L64)

(13) Jumpei Yamasaki (JPN) d. (Q) Rhett Purcell (GBR) 4-6 6-1 6-2

Girls R1 (L64)

Yukina Saigo (JPN) d. (12) Isabelle Wallace (GBR) 6-4 2-6 6-3

Harriet's original plan was to go to Egypt this month (don't know why she has withdrawn). Her performances in junior events post Wimbledon have been underwhelming, which may have been a factor in not prioritising the Australian Open.
