I've always thought playing here seemed strange for two reasons. 1. Doesn't leave him enough acclimatisation time in Oz ahead of Oz open ( he's been very successful down under when he's headed straight there for New Year) 2. These cooler conditions generally aren't as helpful to a back condition as warmer temperatures.
Other results show Andys wasnt really that bad considering he hasnt had much match practice
Gasquet, Verdasco and Ferrer all went out (2 in straight sets) all were playing lower ranked players than Andy was. I think he is going to try and get a match or 2 in Melbourne and that will hopefully prep him for the AO
I'm a bit pessimistic in the short term, but if the back turns out to be much better, and Andy is confident in it, I see no reason at all for pessimism for the year as a whole.

My pessimism is based in part on my belief that, excluding last year's grass court season, Andy hasn't played well since winning the US Open 18 months ago.
Of course, though I agree, how much of that was down to the back problem we cannot tell. I'm also fairly pessimistic about his chances in the first half of the season, but cautiously optimistic thereafter.
