There's more prestige attached to high performance tennis on the continent, at all levels, and more willingness on the part of local sponsors, usually wealthy businessmen, to support players and teams.
On the women's side, only two seemed to have been in action (although two more clubs yet to post their results).
On the mega plus side, Lucy Brown got a nice win in the singles, 6-3 6-1 (against a girl, admittedly, not very highly ranked but they all need beating).
And Lucy also won her doubles, two crucial points because the team was tied 3-3
The first time, I believe, that Lucy has played French team tennis (sorry Lucy if I'm wrong), so it's great to do well.
A little more expectedly, Mirabelle Njoze was also playing, in the Pre-national league, on 1st May, and she also won her singles, and her doubles, with the team ending up 3-3
She beat Clara Froget in the singles, the 15 year-old who created headlines at the weekend, winning her first quali round in the WTA event, beating an opponent ranked WR 580 or so. (I think she then gave a w/o in q round two)
In other words I think you agree with me when I say you can't have it both ways . You can't have my cake and eat it all !
Some times I wonder if players think I was born yesterday if you want A1 to help fund you then you play for A1 not a club in french league . Unfortunately there is a culture in GB tennis where some players expect something for nothing it's almost ingrained into the culture .
There is no such thing as a free lunch . i may do a man 2 or 3 favours but I will expect a favour back after all I am a businessman not a f... communist
Apologies to Lucy Brown when I said I thought it was her first time playing French league (and put in bracket 'apologies to her if I'm wrong' - which was good thinking - I was !).
On her blog, she says she's been playing for the last 5 years. So WELL wrong.
ALthough when I look it up, she didn't play any match last year, or the year before.
But did play and win one match in 2012. (Don't know for before as records only cover the previous three years, on a rolling basis).
Her blog says that effectively she's treating this month as a training block, with league matches at the weekend. Which makes sense. And that she had a wonderful away match in Corsica this last weekend, which was looking gorgeous.
A1 how frustrating, I detect a degree of altruism (not communism) and agitation that players are sacrificing loyalty for a quick buck.
What is your primary motivation is it a belief that developing a semi-professional tennis league is a key component in UK tennis development or do you want to create a team that dominates the existing set up. I don't feel the later option ie playing lesser known players who are more committed is necessarily a bad thing.
I presume it is difficult to use the top younger players 15-19 because of their commitment to the junior ITF. Both the Neville brothers talk about how playing semi pro cricket in their early teens taught them a lot about how to compete which served them very well as elite athletes later.
Adam TB (for Hudson's team) beat a decentish ranked Spanish player, 6-3 4-6 6-3
Adam TB and Oli teamed up against Tom and the Spaniard, winning in a MTB. Adam and Oli's team beat Tom's team 5-1.
Marcus got the win in the singles, 6-4 7-6, but couldn't make it a double with the doubles, (not playing with a very high ranked partner), and the team lost 1-5
Nice to see some 'old' names:
Amy Sargant won her singles match 2&1 (against a lowly ranked girl), and doubles, and her team won 6-0
and 'new' ones:
Young Brit (from Jersey, I think), Stuart Parker, won his match 0&2 against someone with the same rank as himself, so well done. And his doubles in the MTB. Team won 6-0. (Scott Clayton plays for the same team normally).
Matt Short gets the best win of the day so far, 1&3, against the highest player amongst today's Brits' opponents (Spaniard Seb Rivera, currently WR 1285, ex 700 or so, and French domestic ranking -15).
Oliver Hudson and Adam TB's team were playing a seriously weaker team today, so quick result, both the GB lads winning easily (Adam with two bagels), and the doubles, and won the team won the match 6-0
Neil P has presumably decided not to play (or something's come up/gone wrong), although he was on the team sheet. Three matches now and he hasn't shown so guess he's changed his mind.
Still no sign of Liam or Farris - guess both must have signed up last year (you have to do it pre-November of the preceding year) and then things looked a bit different by the time they got round to spring (Liam for a good reason, Farris maybe less so . . . )
But Matt Short continues to clock up some excellent wins:
Matt Short def. Jonathan Kanar WR 772 7-6 6-3
Unfortunately he couldn't get the doubles and the team lost 4-2.
Dan Cox got another two easy victories, and the team won 5-1
Marcus Willis also on form, beating lesser ranked players in singles and doubles - another 5-1 team win
Dave Rice got a very decent win:
Dave Rice def. Mick Lescure WR 577, 7-5 6-3
George Coupland lost 4&4, but they teamed up to win the doubles and the team won 4-2
Tom Farqh. won his singles against a decent player but unfortunately lost the doubles in a MTB and the team lost 2-4
Jamie Feaver also won singles and doubles, team win 5-1 (won the singles 7-5 in the third, and then went on to the doubles - well done to the 'oldie'!)
Easy win for Scott Clayton, and a win in the doubles - team won 6-0
For the women, Lucy Brown def. Fiona Codino WR 1083, 6-7 6-1 7-5
and won her doubles; the team won 4-2
Amy Sargant also got a decent win in the singles; lost her doubles, but the team won 5-1
Mirabelle thrashed her reasonably ranked young opponent, and won her doubles, team drew 3-3
But I see that Alex Ward is over in Germany playing Bundesliga tennis there.
If anyone knows if there's a public site with results (or has access via the federation site or whatever), please add it here. Otherwise, Alex - let us know how you get on and good luck !
Apologies - managed to get myself all confused - it was LAST week where there was no league action . . . So:
Two more wins (singles and doubles) from Lucy Brown, and the team won 4-2
Tom F won his singles in three but lost the doubles in a MTB. Team drew 3-3
Jamie feaver also got two wins - team won 6-0
Dave Rice and George COupland both won their singles, and playing together, won their doubles - team won 5-1
Oli Hudson lost out in a tight three setter (to Gilles de Sousa, ex top 600 player). But teammate Adam TB won, and the pair won their doubles. Team drew 3-3
