A battle of two 14yr olds, but again the standard was really high and would not have looked out of place in a 10K.
Jodie has a very big serve and a very good all round game and is definitely one to watch for the future. First set Jodie dominated, playing really well and making very few errors. Very strong on her serve and giving the Russian girl all sorts of problems on her serve. The only issue was that Jodie tightened serving out the first set and there were a lot of deuce points, before she finally served it out.
Second set was one way traffic to the Russian. Jodie struggled on her serve and made an awful lot of unforced errors and lost the second set 6-2.
Third set was a bit up and down. A couple of early breaks. Went back to 4-4. Jodie broke after some very long points to serve for the match. However she tightened up went 0-40 down, but then hit some really big serves to win five points in a row and take the match. At which stage the Russian girl launched her racket which went about 25 foot in the air and landed on the other side of the net.
Jodie has plenty of talent. A massive serve, strong on both forehand and backhand and was finding winners and great angles. The pleasing thing was that she punished everything short or that sat up.
Set up at Liverpool was OK, but the two matches were on opposite sides of the viewing area, so difficult following both matches closely. Quite warm(for a change) and a reasonable number of spectators (20ish). The only thing I would knock was the courts, which were fading and had netball markings across them.
Thanks Paul - I haven't seen her play but your comments echo positive ones from others who have. Jodie is one of our contingent down for the Junior Orange Bowl (under 14s) next month. For completeness:
