Girls: 2013 Lee Duk Hee Cup Chuncheon International Junior Tennis Championships, Korea - Grade 2 (Week 44)

An opportunity for Katie Boulter and Harriet Dart to get something out of their Asian trip after a disappointing GA.  Freya Christie's opponent reached the semis in Osaka. Gabi Taylor is one of three late withdrawals.  Hard work for any engraver who has to include the transliterated tournament name smile

R1 (L32)

(1) Katie Boulter (GBR) v Q/LL

Freya Christie (GBR) v (6) Xiaodi You (CHN)

Emilie Francati (DEN) v (4) Harriet Dart (GBR)

Q/LL v Emily Arbuthnott (GBR)

An excellent win today for Freya over the world no. 50. Xiaodi You had a great tournament last week, reaching the semis and winning the doubles with Shilin Xu, but it looks like a case of after the (Lord) Mayor's show, as she was well beaten by Freya in singles and (with Xu) lost to Emily + partner in doubles

R1 (L32)

(1) Katie Boulter (GBR) d. (LL) Yunjeong Park (KOR) 6-2 6-2
Freya Christie (GBR) d. (6) Xiaodi You (CHN) 6-2 6-2
Emilie Francati (DEN) d. (4) Harriet Dart (GBR) 6-1 6-3
Emily Arbuthnott (GBR) d. (Q) Jin Ju Lee (KOR) 6-3 6-2

R2

(1) Katie Boulter (GBR) v Kimberly Birrell (AUS)
(Q) Thanthita Suetrong (THA) v Freya Christie (GBR)
Emily Arbuthnott (GBR) v (2) Shilin Xu (CHN)

I don't know about scores but it seems that Katie and Freya have won comfortably.

The exclusion of Emily from the tweet suggested that Emily didn't win - which indeed turns out to be the case. Katie next plays an in-form American who has only conceded 4 games. Freya's first quarter-final above G4 is against a familiar name - Bernard's sister, one of the highest ranked 98s. We will have one doubles finalist as Emily and Freya are on opposite sides in one semi, but Harriet and Katie lost.

R2

(1) Katie Boulter (GBR) d. Kimberly Birrell (AUS) 6-2 1-6 6-2
Freya Christie (GBR) d. (Q) Thanthita Suetrong (THA) 6-1 6-2
(2) Shilin Xu (CHN) d. Emily Arbuthnott (GBR) 6-1 6-1

QF

(1) Katie Boulter (GBR) v (5) Katrine Isabel Steffensen (USA)
(3) Sara Tomic (AUS) v Freya Christie (GBR)

Freya having a storming tournament, now just one win away probably from being our first '97 girl into the top 100, thanks to wins in both singles and doubles. Katie couldn't join her, but Freya could avenge Katie in the semis.

QF

(5) Katrine Isabel Steffensen (USA) d. (1) Katie Boulter (GBR) 6-4 6-4
Freya Christie (GBR) d. (3) Sara Tomic (AUS) 6-2 6-2

SF

(5) Katrine Isabel Steffensen (USA) v Freya Christie (GBR)

Doubles Final

Birrell/Tjandramulia (AUS) v Cabrera/Christie (AUS/GBR)

Iain Bates: "Boooom! @Freya_Christie edges a 3 hour epic 6-3 in 3rd to reach the final of the G2 here in Korea. Great performance. #strong"

Reaching both finals here takes Freya to 315 points, which as David suggested above ought to be enough to see her into the ITF junior top 100 just before she turns 16 next week A slight caution though - only a handful of points cover quite a lot of players around the 100 mark - 315 is enough for 95th place in the current rankings but no. 100 is only 5 points behind that.

Let's hope she wins both titles to secure the spot.

But as the year end is near she'll probably end up top 100 anyway

Oh, she'll certainly be top 100 in 2014 with currently 18 1995 borns in the top 100 ( so will be leaving the rankings ) and Freya herself having nothing to defend before April.

Be nice to do it though in 2013 as a 1997 born ( and I note so late 1997 born so she is doing well ).

ITF still haven't updated scores, but according to a reliable poster on TennisForum:

SF

Freya Christie (GBR) d. (5) Katrine Isabel Steffensen (USA) 4-6 6-2 6-3
(2) Shilin Xu (CHN) d. Emilie Francati (DEN) 6-0 6-1

The Chinese girl has only dropped 3 games in her last three matches, so should be considerably fresher than Freya

Less battle-hardened, no?

Excellent work from Ms Christie.

Freya gave Shilin Xu her hardest match of the tournament but couldn't come away with the title

(2) Shilin Xu (CHN) d. Freya Christie (GBR) 7-6(7) 6-3

Great week for Freya but a very short turnround before Loughborough where she has a WC, so maybe they will try and give her one for Manchester instead or as well

Shame she couldn't end the week with a title but her opponent in the final seemed to be on fire this week based on results.

Hope Freya can continue to build on this.
