It's confirmed on the Beeb.
Alhough to my mind there really is no such thing as minor back surgery.
I hope everything is straightforward and Andy has a speedy and successful recovery.
Nasty. But it has been very obvious that his back was troubling him - close watchers can always see the signs. I just hope it is successful and he comes out fit and fighting next year.
Oh my goodness ! But the timing is great. He's won Wimbledon and got us through the Davis Cup. He will probably have the very best of surgeons on the job and can enjoy time with Kim and the dogs recuperating. I hope he feels reasonably good about the decision. It must be a bit scary though.
Mike Dickson in the Mail has a fairly detailed report on this:

Perfect timing, I think, if it has to be done - and if this ends up making it less painful to play on clay, it will do his chances of being world no. 1 and GB's of winning Davis Cup a power of good!

This has been known about in the press for days, but there has been an embargo so couldn't tell you.

From Beeb website. Couldn't have said it better myself!
Jamie Baker, Murray's friend and former Davis Cup team-mate, said: "Andy does have a knack of always looking in pain, but this is something he feels is the right thing to do and we have to trust him.
"We can't underestimate how tough emotionally the last 12 months has been, so it's understandable if he's a little bit burned out, and this break will give him the best chance of picking up more major titles next year."
Having read about the procedure in my daily paper, it seems to be a straightforward minor keyhole op.
JT (aka John Terry) had the same procedure and was back playing within 8 weeks, so all things being equal, we should have a positive outcome.
