Boys & Girls: World Junior Championships, Czech Republic - U14 (Week 32)

Both our teams qualified for the world junior (under 14) championships in Prostejov. The girls (Georgina Axon, Anastasia Mikheeva and Katie Swan, returning after her traumatic experience in Guatemala)  are in a tough group with Australia (3) and USA (5) the seeded nations. We open tomorrow against Australia, whose top two players have won or reached finals of G4s on clay this month in preparation.

The boys are seeded 7 and in a group with France (3) who beat us in the European Summer Cup finals (and they include European champion Corentin Moutet), Chile and Japan. The team of Max Stewart, Finn Bass and Dominic West  open tomorrow against Japan

Good to hear that Katie is back in action, I was wondering how that emergency in Guatemala had turned out.

Not katie but didn't know where to post it:

I saw Harriet Dart complaining about having to have an MRI done (a tweet from 29th July). Any idea why ? Hope she's OK . .. (and Katie too , of course).

No idea about Harriet, but her MRI may explain the late withdrawal from the under 18 team. She is still down to play a G1 junior event in 2 weeks time, so it looks as if the result of the scan wasn't too serious

In Prostejov all the matches which have ended so far have gone the way of the seeded nation - which is unusual considering the difficulty in comparing nations at this level.

Having lost their opener the girls were paired with the other winners today, the extremely strong US team. Katie made her singles debut and led by a set and 4-1, but that was as good as it got. They play Italy tomorrow with only minor places at stake.

The boys impressed again, winning their second match by 2-1 to set up a decider against France - the winner reaching the semis. Unless Max can avenge a heavy loss to Moutet in the European Championships they will need Finn to win the second singles, against a player with a similar record to him against the Japanese and Chileans.

Live scoring is available at www.tennisscores.de/livescore/itfjun/livescorer.html# Play starts tomorrow at 8.30 BST

Girls RR

(5) USA 3 GBR 0

Katie lost 6-0 4-6 4-6
Anastasia lost 2-6 2-6
Georgina/Katie lost 6-7(5) 3-6

Boys RR

(7) GBR 2 CHI 1

Finn lost 3-6 2-6
Max won 7-5 6-2
Finn/Max won 6-4 6-4

Finn did manage to win the opening singles, ensuring we would at least have a shot at a semifinal place in the doubles. Max got twice as many games against Moutet as in the Euros, but was still well beaten. The doubles was tight, but clinched by the French in the second set tiebreak, so we play-off for 5th - 8th against Canada

The girls claimed their first win, so will be playing for 9th-12th against Egypt

Boys RR

(3) France 2 (7) GBR 1

Finn won 6-2 5-7 6-3
Max lost 0-6 4-6
Dominic/Max lost 4-6 6-7(4)

Girls RR

GBR 2 Italy 1

Katie won 6-3 3-6 6-2
Anastasia won 6-3 6-2
Anastasia/Georgina lost 6-4 3-6 3-6

The girls finished 11th after a 2-1 loss to Egypt and a 2-0 win over Colombia (Georgie winning singles on both days)

Both finals are between USA and Russia with the US winning both singles in the girls event to claim the title, whilst the boys face a decisive doubles
