RE: Week 32 - WTA Premier 5 - Toronto, Canada - Hard

I take it she will also withdraw from the doubles as well then??

It's a right wrist injury apparently (which is, at least, a bit less worrying than a left wrist inury)

From Anne's commentary on BT Sport - Laura was warming up this morning and felt some pain in her right wrist, but was planning on playing 'like Rafa Nadal' i.e. running round her backhand or chipping it if necessary (don't know if she was joking because that doesn't sound too sensible). Then when warming up 15 minutes ago it didn't feel right and she decided not to play.

Yes I was thinking that - as her BT Sport début it's not an auspicious startcry

Anne also added that the medical staff believe it is probably either a tendon or cartilage issue, which is not good news.

Even more annoying is the fact that Wickmayer looks awful in her match against BMS and would have been there for the taking.

It's been confirmed, Laura has also withdrawn from the doubles and her and Lisa have been replaced by an alt. pairing.

 Typical!

So while the second tier of Brits have loved Canada no luck at all there for Laura or Heather

Thinking back her left wrist was in a cast if I remember correctly after the 2010 Aussie Open and she was out for 2 months.

She must be a serious doubt for the US open, and I remember how devastated she was to miss the 2011 Aussie Open.

Her double handed backhand has really improved over the last 12 months, but she is very aggressive with the strike unlike the forehand which is more pure timing. It's probably just a strengthening issue which with the right rest and rehab should be Ok for the future, unlike e.g Delpo's. At least thats what I'm hoping.

I was watching on Eurosport and the withdrawal caused absolute chaos for the production team - panic stations all round.

Laura's tweet seems to suggest that it is not too serious. Trouble is, with wrist injuries, it is often difficult to tell.

So sorry to anyone who came out to @rogerscupto to watch me play today. Hope to be back on court soon!

Oh dear, I always worry about wrist injuries - I think they can often be moee aerious than first imagined. Hopefully not in this case and it will be sorted reasonably quickly.

Whatever, I think quite right to withdraw, especially if it was bad enough that she was considering doing a "Rafa".

Kinda feel sorry for Raymond, that's the second big tourney Laura's pulled out of dubs last minute with her at.
