Yes, Woking is surprisingly weak and it does seem a bit crazy that 8 points are on offer for beating unranked players, but there you go - in general, the WTA ranking system gives huge weight to R1 wins, the ATP hardly any weight at all.
Katie Boulter has one one counting score at the moment but it's a 4-pointer, so winning tomorrow would get her on the rankings with just 2 counters because she would have more than 10 points.

Just one relevant H2H - Lisa beat Eden in 3 sets in Glasgow last year. No doubt there would be more relevant H2Hs if we looked at British Tour events too!

Can only see the 4 x all GB ties producing GB victories, with Lisa, Tara, Jess and Katie winning.
However I suspect the WTA will be delighted with the weak draw and all the GB girls that will get an official ranking - Jessica, Sophie, Hollie, Katie(probably) with Manisha and Jess(if she wins) climbing.
DavidC must know all about Brigit - wasn't she one of the top juniors ?
I believe she's off to the States this year too (university of South Carolina). Their site says she used to be the GB no. 1 - I assume they mean juniors ???
Don't be misled by claims that player X was ranked 1 (in her age group) within GB. They are based on LTA rankings, which use LTA tournaments as their basis. The current GB under 18 number 1 for instance is not Katy Dunne, Katie Boulter or Harriet Dart but Emily Arbuthnott.

Thank you for that. I was a little confused and figured I must have simply missed Brigit's exploits along the way. Now I understand . .
NB this is the uni site if you're interested: http://www.game****sonline.com/sports/w-tennis/spec-rel/111512aaa.html
To scottie1, I don't know about Sophie and pit-pat tennis but on a different forum, from someone who saw her match yesterday, supposedly Sophie had an attack of blasting the balls into the blue yonder, shouting at herself at one moment to 'stop hitting the balls over the fence' and even necessitating the match to be stopped briefly at one point because they'd run out of balls !!! Maybe she'd got fed up of playing pit-pat too ! (To be fair, she also served the most aces, I seem to remember, that first day, so I'm not knocking her. In fact, I think I'd put my money on Sophie, rather than Jess, in that match . . .
Briefly looking at the other players I don't know, it's only really Jessica Simpson's opponent who's had a pretty poor year, barely two wins together; the others look pretty tough.
NB does anyone know why the Japanese players are here in force ? Any particular reason ?

Maybe the Japanese are heare to pick up cheap ranking points?
Don't know if this has been said already, but rumour has it Joss Rae will be playing doubles this week with Lisa...
Yep, she definitely is - and been drawn against Tara and Marta S. (RUS) the number one seeds! Not a wonderful welcome back but I hope she enjoys it . . .
When the WTA last changed the ranking system the number of girls with a ranking fell from about 1500 to 1000. It has since started to creep up again as the girls have learnt how to acquire easy points. It now stands at about 1230.
Sam squeaks the first set in a TB. Jade's been a break up all second set, got broken back, re-broke, has 2 SP, saves a BP, double-faults, saves another BP - and so it goes on - she doesn't give up, our Jade . . . And Naomi has obviously got better things to do than wasting all day on a tennis court and wins 6-0, 6-1
Edit: Thank you ! So sorry - geographical brain explosion - think Canada . . .

Sophie beats Jess 5-7 7-5 6-3 and that should be enough to get her a WTA ranking with 10 points from 2 events (1 from winning QR1 at Nottingham 50K last month, 1 more for qualifying here and a further 8 for winning today)
Not sure who else is close to getting back to an official ranking other than Harriet Dart now. Sophie, Hollie and Jessica both will be there from this week's tournament.
Any ideas if Harriet is due to play on the ITF tour soon?
