To be honest I find it extremely annoying the the top players play on centre court as much as they do. Firstly I don't see why anybody would pay for centre court tickets for day 1 or day 2, the chances of seeing a decent match are almost non-existent. Secondly there is something wonderful about sending the defending champion, and other top players, to play a match or two out in the sticks, on a smallish court. The old court 2 is celebrated as the "graveyard of champions" but short of a major scheduling problem you will never see one of the real top players playing on court 2 now and IMO view that is both sad and wrong.
Whilst I agree with you in some ways, you need to remember that probably the majority of those who go to centre court are only really tennis fans for 2 weeks of the year. They go to see Federer, not to see a great match. And then they love to brag about the fact that they have been. Am I being too cynical ?
And sticking Fed on one of the outside courts could be seen as a health and safety concern as the court simply couldn't cope with the numbers of people wanting and trying to get in.
Just thought of a little Wimbledon story of mine that sprung to mind. Don't know where to put it, but here seems as good as any other place.
Many years ago, I used to play a lot of cricket and we actually played against Wimbledon cricket club on the middle weekend of the tennis fortnight. At the bottom end of the cricket ground there are some grass tennis courts which some of the players would use for practice and warm up.
Well mid afternoon on that Saturday, a buzz went around the field as a certain Gabriella SabbatinI walked across to get some practice. She ended up on the practice court just 5 yards behind the boundary rope. I was captain of the fielding side at the time and doing my best to maintain the team's concentration, but you will not believe the number of volunteers I had to go and field and deep square leg !!
