Just walked in the door, having spent the last hour out, thinking 'go, Jade, go', without being able to check on the smartphone, most frustrating.
So pleased for her. And just shows what is possible.
NB as Korriban said re Nick B., rankings are all very well but subject to SO many variables - this morning alone, the 6th, 8th, 14th and 21st seeds have all lost.
Ms Whybourn's draw was really not nice. Whybourn/King, 1-4; Broady/Dubois 2-1; Webley-Smith/Majeric 0-3; Smith/Schmiedlova 2-6, 4-5 on serve (Ms Smith having just broken Ms Schmiedlova as she served for the match)
Ms Smith loses 2-6, 4-6. Ms Whybourn goes down 1-6 -- of course, Ms King is a Wimbledon champion (yes, in doubles, but still ...). Ms W-S held several break points on the Majeric serve to go back on serve, but lost to go 1-4 in the end; Ms Broady ahead 3-2 and serving.
Ms Broady 1-0 with an early break in the second set; Ms Whybourn and Ms King 1-1, with Ms Whybourn making a fight for every point (much, much better looking from live scores than the 1st set!); Ms W-S 2-4, again with a lot of fight for each game; Ms South and Ms Peer 1-1 on serve.
Naomi was a set and a break up, now back on serve second set.
A lot of her matches go this way, where opponents are blown away by her serve at first, but then as they start to read it and time it, it becomes a big weakness mid-way through the match, and the rest of her game tends to suffer when the serve isn't winning cheap points. Hope she can keep it going today.....great to have a set in the bag!!
That looked like a really good second set. Would love to hear from anyone who was there.
In other news, Dunne/Burnnet 1-1 in the second; Broady/Dubois 5-6 on serve; EWS/Majeric 3-5 in second; and will Ms South serving to get her first game in the second.
