I really thought Naomi would at least have got closer there, a bit disappointing.

At least we will have one qualifier, but I find it difficult to judge, especially from some of these all Brit clashes, how much some have raised their game on grass or how maybe some have played poorly.

Well done to Melanie - winning third set 6-4.

I thought she came across very well in the interview, and looks in better form physically than she has sometimes on previous occasions.

Injury free, she could get back a fair way up the rankings. Good luck to her.

Agree shame about Naomi thought she might win does not bear well for Wimbledon qualifying.

Mel won but beat three Brits so I dont know how that equates in the swing of things,if she had played foreeign opposition would she still have won. But at least she is through to the main draw

Well done Mel, really good to see her get 3 consecutive wins. Echoing previous thoughts, hoping she can continue to win in the main draw against foreign opposition.

I think that's a winnable match for Anne, she likes grass and paszek is not very confident :)

Paszek always plays well on grass. 2 time Wimbledon QF and eastbourne champion

Mel couldn't have hoped for a better draw. Falconi sucks on grass. Could be a good barometer to see if she's truely back

Very true although Anne did beat her on grass last year at Birmingham

Paszek will have to play well on grass.
She's 1-10 this year, her only win coming, handily, at the AO, beating Voegele.

Tamira is defending 970 grass points from last year. Two first round grass losses at Eastbourne & Wimbledon, would see her WR plummet from 33 to about 120.
That's a lot of pressure.

I think all the GB girls have a realistic chance of winning. All could equally conceivably lose though.

GB draws with rankings, etc:

L32: (WC) Anne Keothavong WR 186 v (1) Tamira Paszek (AUT) WR 33 (CH 26 in Feb)

Looks like a dire draw for Anne at first sight, but the H2H is 2-2 and Anne won their two most recent meetings, both last year, one of which was on grass in Birmingham.

L32: (WC) Johanna Konta WR 166 v (Q) An-Sophie Mestach (BEL) WR 192 (= CH)

Mestach was ranked 1 in juniors in 2011.

L32: (WC) Elena Baltacha WR 200 v (6) Vesna Dolonc (SLO) WR 93 (CH 86 in 2011)

Elena beat Dolonc in 3 sets on clay in Cagnes-sur-Mer last year, so under normal circumstances, would very much fancy her chances on grass, I'm sure.

L32: (Q) Melanie South WR 474 v Irina Falconi (USA) WR 137 (CH 73 in 2011)

Falconi reached the semi-finals here last year, though might not have if Date-Krumm hadn't retired against her in R1 ...

L32: (WC) Tara Moore WR 194 v Tadeja Majeric (SLO) WR 143

Pretty good draw for Tara really - she beat Majeric in a long 3-setter in Kazan last year.

I wouldn't say Mel was back, just playing a little bit better than she has been.

I think realistically 3 winners would be a great effort.
