For any Star Wars fans out there, I noticed a girl called J Fett lost today in the first round according to the RG website. This is hysterically amusing, of course. But for everyone else, this will mean absolutely nothing, and I apologize to them.
My apologies to Jan(a) Fett who in fact WON her R1 match and is now giving Taylor Townsend a good battle on Court 10. Up on court 11 is D. Vader against L. Skywalker in a repeat of their previous Grand Slam contest back in 1983.
And despite a creditable showing in the second set, having seemingly served poorly in the firts, Katie loses to the top seed. Konjuh seems to have gobbled up the Boulter 2nd serve.
2-6 4-6

Data I post, opinions I offer, 'facts' I assert, are almost certainly all stupidly wrong.
I'm not David C, who will be able to give a more comprehensive explanation, but I did look at the Appendix that he or Steven circulated ... recollection is that the WTA rankings for entry and seeding have a much higher cut-off than the ATP rankings.
Katy just had two set points on her opponent's serve at 6-5, but her opponent saved them.

The girl playing Katy today is unranked and had to qualify to reach the main draw. She hasn't bothered much with juniors, as is often the way in Spain.
However her WTA/ITF singles ranking is in the 300s, and in the last 12 months she's won 3 $10k events and reached a $25k final.
She beat Annika Beck (top 70 player and rising) in straight sets a month ago!!!!!
By rights she should be regarded as one of the top 3 or 4 players in the draw and ranked accordingly, but has not been so.
Over in the boys event, Kyle is top 450 ATP (just) and has won 2 $10k events, yet he gets a special seeding of 5.
