Girls: 35° Torneo International Citta Di Santa Croce, Italy - Grade 1 (Week 20)

In 2008 two juniors with connections to Britain and Australia (Jo Konta and Laura Robson) contested the final here. Isabelle Wallace tries to follow suit, but will probably have to find a way past top junior Belinda Bencic in her second match.

R1 (L64)

(15) Isabelle Wallace (GBR) bye

Four of the courts here are streamed but not the one which Izzy plays on tomorrow - though I expect her R3 match, if she and Bencic win tomorrow, to be on one of those.

R2

Constanza Gorches (MEX) v (15) Isabelle Wallace (GBR)

Izzy does get a crack at the top seed, who is in a different league. She won her last junior tournament, a Grade A, dropping no more than a handful of games in any match, whilst her last Pro tournament resulted in a 50k semi

R2

(15) Isabelle Wallace (GBR) d. Constanza Gorches (MEX) 7-6(4) 6-2

R3

(1) Belinda Bencic (SUI) v (15) Isabelle Wallace (GBR)

The website which should have the oop later this evening is http://www.tcsantacroce.com/en/home_torneo.php  There are links from there to the 4 streamed courts (not particularly high quality)

http://www.antenna5.tv/index.php/component/content/article/14424  has live scores - currently showing that Izzy has won her doubles comfortably

It ended 7-5 6-1 with Izzy due back on the same court sometime this evening for her doubles. Being able to extend a set with Bencic is something no-one managed to do in her last GA event so encouraging indeed. Thanks for providing some colour to the match

Thanks for the link... I think Izzy is on court at the moment (or at least a small brunette lefty girl). I'm not sure what the score is but Izzy (if it is indeed her) just got broken by dumping a backhand into the net...

I've watched a few games: easy holds by Bencic, Izzy struggling on serve (broken once and held once from what I could make out). Izzy had a nice lefty serve that set up her forehand. Her backhand seemed a bit more erratic, and generally she's made less balls than Bencic. Her return of Bencic's serve has not been great - most sailing long, one down the line winner (I think the camera is so blurry).

The scoreboard has flicked to 5-4 to Izzy (from 0-0)!

Izzy serves with her back to the court McEnroe style and has displayed some nice variety including a great drop shot.

Izzy's play has picked up a lot from when I started watching, much more control over her ground strokes and better mix of offensive and defensive play.... Still no idea what the score is, but she is acquitting herself much better at the moment - I take back my comments about her backhand for example as it's been solid for the last 30 mins.

Bencic hits a big winner and then it's all over (they're shaking hands at the net). I'm not sure what they scoreline was - the score board has jumped to 5-7 1-4 - but Izzy was playing at a similar level to Belinda, which is encouraging.
