He seemed to have problems with his hip all the clay season, and I was reminded of the back problems during the clay season last year. Then, you may remember, he kept playing with the help of pain-killing injections.
I can't remember whether it was the first match in Monte Carlo or the first match in Madrid this year, he clearly said something like "it's impossible to play like this" and ever since then I have been worried that he was disguising a problem.
I hope he does pull out of the French Open, where he has not much chance of winning even if 100% fit, and get things put right for the grass season.
I hope he didn't do any more damage by playing on to level the match before retiring. I suspect he was determined it should not be said that he only retired because he was losing, so leveled the match and THEN retired.
I was at the first match in Madrid and tweeted saying he looked "lethargic" and wondered if he was ill. With hindsight, this injury must have been the problem. he was down on his haunches after almost every point and clearly struggling with something.
Apparently it wasn't his hip but his lower back, same as last year. He has said that he might miss the French which in all honesty wouldn't be a bad idea given that his clay court season has been one disaster after another.
On a more depressing note I really can't see him playing the Davis Cup match in Croatia.
He had better play. I have already booked my hotel !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dramatic afternoon - I was only following the live scores but a slow start then when he looked halfway to an excellent comeback Andy retires and now might be out of the French Open.
Would be a disappointment for sure if Andy can't play one of the slams but I agree with the view that this being the one he probably won't win anyway being 100% fit for Wimbledon is more important. Hopefully after some treatment the injury will be better and he can play the French and still be 100% for Wimbledon.
I do hope Andy doesn't play at Roland Garros unless he really feels he's 100% fit - those 5 setters on clay can be real killers.
And I assume that, although he'd love to be No. 1, his main aim, presumably, is to win another Grand Slam (or three), with Wimbledon being presumably his number one choice.
Hope he recuperates well - he's got a great team around him.

Sadly though, I fear you may be right.
Personally I wouldn't be gutted if he didn't play. I was exited by the way the other guys stepped up to the mark without him there.
But then I wasn't planning on going to it, so hope it's not a waste of a hotel room for you Bob.
A bit of a gutting and demoralising day yesterday with the back being such a cause for concern. However, whilst it would be disappointing to miss the French this was never going to be his top priority and I'd rather Andy concentrated on being fit for Wimbledon and didn't take any undue risks. Think there must be a least an element of doubt in Andy's participation in the Croatia tie with the different movement and the fact it's such a short turn around after the Us Open. I'm planning on going to Umag too and whilst I'd be disappointed if not in Andy's best interests I would fully understand.
Talking about the team - where is Andy Ireland these days? I haven't seen him for ages.
I remember hearing recently that one of his team had got family commitments, and wanted time out. I'm not sure if it was Andy though.
It was Andy Ireland. They said on SKY that he didn't want to travel so much this year and would be replaced by the other physio who was in Madrid (and whose name I've forgotten) when AI wasn't available
