I speak no Spanish. How should you pronounce 'Granollers' ?
I've alwyas used three equal weight syllables, with a french-style ending i.e. gra-no-lay
The Uk commentators have a strong second syllable accent gra-NO-lers with an english 'ers' ending
OK. The general rule in Spanish is that the emphasis should go on the penultimate syllable unless there is an accent to change that emphasis. Having said that, his name is pronounced by the Spanish commentators with the emphasis on the last syllable. Not sure why. Also remember that the "ll" in Spanish is the "y" in English.
So the pronunciation would be
Gran-oy-airs
with the emphasis on "airs".
Note: My Spanish is pretty good but by no means infallible, and I explain all this with great trepidation, knowing we have a person that works as an "official interpretor" within our midst !!
There is a difference between the headline on the BBC Sport Homepage that says "Retired" and the title within the report when you open it that says "Knocked Out".
He seemed to have problems with his hip all the clay season, and I was reminded of the back problems during the clay season last year. Then, you may remember, he kept playing with the help of pain-killing injections.
I can't remember whether it was the first match in Monte Carlo or the first match in Madrid this year, he clearly said something like "it's impossible to play like this" and ever since then I have been worried that he was disguising a problem.
I hope he does pull out of the French Open, where he has not much chance of winning even if 100% fit, and get things put right for the grass season.
I hope he didn't do any more damage by playing on to level the match before retiring. I suspect he was determined it should not be said that he only retired because he was losing, so leveled the match and THEN retired.
Apparently it wasn't his hip but his lower back, same as last year. He has said that he might miss the French which in all honesty wouldn't be a bad idea given that his clay court season has been one disaster after another.
On a more depressing note I really can't see him playing the Davis Cup match in Croatia.
