Staggeringly poor performance from Andy. Backhand was okay but everything else was rubbish. Hardly got any cheap points on serve and his forehand produced numerous unforced errors and was frequently too short in rallies giving Stan the initiative. 6-1, 6-2 was reflective of the match.
Well there you go I did think it would be very tough today. Clay is clearly Stan's best surface, whilst clay is clearly not Andy's, coupled with the fact that they always have tough matches on other surfaces and also the H2H record on clay this for me was always going to be very tough.
Saying that Andy didn't turn up today and made it far too easy, I doubt the result would have been any different even if he had but still not very good.
Andy summed it up quite well in his Press Conference. The 5 imperatives for ball striking on clay - are to serve well, then hit groundstrokes with power, with spin, deep and over the net. He did the opposite on all 5!!
There's a point when you play so extraordinarily badly, but you know you're a good player, that it's probably very easy to just forget about it, have a laugh, and move on. I hope today was one of those days.
If I'm Nadal looking at the opposition, not sure I'd be too scared!!!!!!!
I missed this match owing to a domestic emergency. Maybe it's just as well! I was going to watch it on "catch-up", but it would be better not to bother, by the sound of it.
