RE: Week 16 - ATP Masters 1000 - Monte Carlo (Clay)

First set was great, second set was a bit scrappy in parts but overall nothing to complain about.

I think there have been quite a few signs of a determination to make this a significantly more productive clay court season than usual.

Hopefully today was just the start of these intentions bearing fruit.

Don't know why, but I have bad vibes about the Wawrinka match up.

Hope I am proved to be wrong.

I hope you are, too!

The H2H is 8-4 in Andy's favour, though Stan won their only two meetings on clay: but that was back in 2005 and 2008. In fact 3 of Stan's wins were between 2005 to 2008. I would say I'm nervous, but hopeful.

Based on how Andy played yesterday, I think he ought to come through against Stan, but it will probably be a dogfight. If he does, the QF (Tsonga or Melzer) should actually be more straightforward. SF with Rafa, realistically, forget it!!!

First competitive match on clay, I thought Andy was really excellent. I noticed his backhand down the line was being used much more than on the hardcourts and to great effect, and his (first) serve looked in much better shape......

However, Rafa was simply brilliant. Forehand as breathtaking and devastating as ever, and if I'm not wrong his backhand has gone up 3 notches in power and potency since his long "break"........depressing for everyone else!

Stan has had a couple of cracking matches in the last few months, one against, Tsonga and another against Federer, although he didn't win he must have given them a fright - certainly challenging them to play their best

Wawrinka should be a strong test, but I am taking Andy to achieve his first clay court win against Stan.

I think Andy will prevail but will be a test. Hope he can start strongly can't afford to give the first set away with a couple of careless breaks of serve. Think he'll do it in 3

After a lively start Andy's forehand has deserted him.
