Girls: 21st Sarawak Chief Minister's Cup, Malaysia - Grade 1 (Week 11)

Katie Boulter and Isabelle Wallace are both seeded but likely to face very tough opening matches. Katie will probably face Ellen Perez, who beat her last week en route to the title, whilst Izzy could well face fast-rising Aussie Sara Tomic (Bernard's sister) who beat Izzy's conqueror before losing in the semis last week.

R1 (L64)

(15) Katie Boulter (GBR) bye

(13) Isabelle Wallace (GBR) bye

....and so it came to pass. Izzy did beat Sara in 3 sets a year ago in a G4, but both have improved considerably since.

R2

Ellen Perez (AUS) v (15) Katie Boulter (GBR)
(13) Isabelle Wallace (GBR) v Sara Tomic (AUS)

Izzy was well beaten, but Katie exacted revenge over a strong opponent. Unfortunately she is in a tough section of the draw, and the top seed ranked 7 awaits. However Katie did beat her in Japan last year.

R2

(15) Katie Boulter (GBR) d. Ellen Perez (AUS) 4-6 6-1 6-1
Sara Tomic (AUS) d. (13) Isabelle Wallace (GBR) 6-1 6-2

R3

(1) Ching-Wen Hsu (TPE) v (15) Katie Boulter (GBR)

A very impressive scoreline following on from the previous day. Next up is the seventh seed, who Katie had a battle with in Japan last autumn, prevailing 6-4 in the third

QF

(15) Katie Boulter (GBR) v (7) Mami Adachi (JPN)

By the way.....

QF: (15) Katie Boulter (GBR) beat (7) Mami Adachi (JPN) 7-5 6-2

SF: (15) Katie Boulter (GBR) vs Y Wang (CHN)

Excellent, excellent set of results in this G1 tournament. Well done Katie....thank God you're flying the flag splendidly in what has been a below par Asian tour for the GB squad to date. Good luck for tomorrow.

Yan Wang has had a very good tournament, losing no more than 5 games in any match. Photos of Katie and Luke in the Borneo Post round-up, which uses stronger language than most media when commenting on junior doubles ( "Meanwhile, two more seeded pairs were booted out of the girls doubles semi-finals when top seeds Hsu Ching Wen (Chinese Taipei) and her partner from China Xu Shilin suffered a 1-6, 3-6 shocking loss...")

Good find! That's got to be the best link between Borneo and British tennis since Belinda made the GB top 10 in 1986. wink

SF: (15) Katie Boulter (GBR) beat Y Wang (CHN) w/o

FI: (15) Katie Boulter (GBR) vs (2) Ipek Soylu (TUR)

Probably not appropriate to say well done, but I'm sure everyone on this forum has their fingers crossed for you in tomorrow's final.

When was the last time we had a G1 winner? A while ago, I suspect, which is a little discouraging, but let's hope Katie can win and inspire her team mates to copy her and create some real competition.

Heather Watson winning in Mexico (2008) though she of course won a Grand Slam the following year.  The final will be tough though, as Soylu is accomplished both as a junior (R3 of the last 3 slams) and pro (WTA690 after a F, SF and QF in her last 3  $10K events)
