Katy broken in the first game.

Which Ip then consilidates *0-2

Katy on board to 15 1-2*

Attagirl. Katy breaks back *2-2

And holds safely  3-2*

Another break. Thats 4 games in a row for Katy *4-2

Make that 5.  Hold to 15  5-2*

Ip stops the rot, but Katy will serve for the set *5-3

Oh damn...  broken 5-4*

No problem, she only wanted to serve first in the second set... breaks to 0 to take the set 6-4

Set 2:

3rd break in a row  0-1*

Then a hold, unfortunately *0-2

We're mirroring the first set here.  Katy holds 1-2*

Breakback time. Still mirroring the first... *2-2

Hold to love  3-2*

thats 9 points in a row for Katy, as she breaks to love  *4-2

Up to 12 in a row, Ip gets 1, Katy gets the next 5-2*

Ip holds, but Katy will serve for the match *5-3

Ugh... broken to love.  5-4*  Im expecting Katy to break here, would give a symmetry to the match

And she obliges, breaking to 30 to win the match 6-4 6-4

Doubles R2

Buayam/Sun (THA/CHN) v (4) Dunne/Makarova (GBR/USA)
Dart/Hsu (GBR/TPE) v (2) Lottner/Routliffe (GER/CAN)

In singles Katy is in the top section, where top seed Yulia Putintseva (WTA 122) withdrew. However the player benefiting from that Elizaveta Kulichkova was ranked as high as 3 a few months ago, so wouldn't be a much easier proposition, assuming they both win tonight.

Thanks for that commentary

Good job from Katy; well done.
But now, a big step up in class it seems

mmm. yes, Putintseva showed quite impressively in the senior MD - she looks to be the real deal

But to no avail as they lose serve immediately and lose the set 6-3

Ok, nobody else about...

Strange old start to this match, first 4 games all being breaks... *2-2

Make that 5.  Broken to love 2-3*

And that'll be 6 then... beeak to 15 from 15-15 *3-3

Break number 7 to love.  Katy now has 3 points on her own serve in 4 games... 3-4*

Unfortunately the first hold of the match goes to Kulichkova.  Katy did have at least one break point tho  *3-5

Katy broken again to 15 for the loss of the set   3-6

That was 4 points on serve in 5 games for Katy...

Set2:

Kulichkova hold to deuce *0-1

Time for a hold Katy? Afraid not... broken to 30 0-2*

Hold to 30.  Tihs is looking bad...  *0-3

We have a hold! (to 15) 1-3*

Hello... Katy breaks to 30 to get back on serve. *2-3

1 breakpoint saved, and Katy holds  3-3*

Anmost a sniff at 15-30 but Kulichkova hold *3-4

Now everyone's holding serve  4-4*

Hold to 30 *4-5

Katy saves 2 match points to get back to Deuce, but cant save a third.  GSM Kulichkova 6-3 6-4

Not sure what happened to Katy's serve in the 1st set

It wasn't a great day in the doubles, but here's a report on the singles match, which reveals that Katy's target for the year is WTA top 700 (not particularly ambitious, but certainly achievable). Katy lost in 3 sets to Kulickkova back in 2011

Doubles R2

Buayam/Sun (THA/CHN) d. (4) Dunne/Makarova (GBR/USA) 6-1 6-0
(2) Lottner/Routliffe (GER/CAN) d. Dart/Hsu (GBR/TPE) 6-3 6-2

Thanks for the game by game updates Reeltime. Katy commented that her serve had let her down. Apparently her plans include "coming home to rehab and hav a fitness block, then the 10k's in the uk probably" I guess that means the 4 tournaments starting in Cardiff at the end of February.

Meanwhile the Ana Konjuh show continues.

The Croatian won both the U18 Eddie Herr and Orange Bowl titles back to back at the end of 2012 as a 14 year old, and has now advanced to the semi finals of the AO without dropping a set. I believe of all the top seeds, she is the only one who didn't bother to play the warm up junior tournament in Oz the week before. She's 15 now albeit less than a month ago. And she has also reached the doubles semi.

Sounds a bit like Laura back in the day, although if anything she seems to have an extra level of consistency to win efficiently week in week out. That's 16 matches in a row won against 16, 17 and 18 year olds. Hope I haven't jinxed her!!

As well as Konjuh the two Brit-slayers (Kontaveit and Kulichkova) have both reached the semis without losing a set. The only chance of a non-K winning is the one player who has dropped a set - Siniakova (and even then her first name is Katerina wink)
