Boys & Girls: Copa Del Cafe, Costa Rica - Grade 1 (Week 1)

Second opportunity for Harriet Dart to progress up the top 100. This week the COSAT circuit moves to hard courts, which should help her, and she has on paper a decent first round draw for a Grade 1

Boys R1 (L64)

(11) Alexander Sendegeya (GBR) v Simon Stevens (BEL)

Tom Hill (GBR) v Andres Alfonzo Paredes (VEN)

Girls R1 (L64)

(10) Harriet Dart (GBR) v Paula Andrea Perez-Garcia (COL)

Harriet may have enjoyed a cup of coffee after a routine win - next up is her doubles partner, which should be within her capabilities, although the American claimed a top 100 scalp at the Eddie Herr. Harriet is joined by Alex, who recovered after a slow start.

Boys R1 (L64)

(11) Alexander Sendegeya (GBR) d. Simon Stevens (BEL) 0-6 6-3 6-2
Andres Alfonzo Paredes (VEN) d. Tom Hill (GBR) 6-2 6-1

R2

(11) Alexander Sendegeya (GBR) v Jordi Arconada (ARG)

Girls R1 (L64)

(10) Harriet Dart (GBR) d. Paula Andrea Perez-Garcia (COL) 6-1 6-1

R2

(10) Harriet Dart (GBR) v Alexandra Morozova (USA)

The Copa Del Cafe website doesn't seem to offer real time or even intermittent updating of match results during the day, so it looks like we have to wait until tomorrow for today's results.

The live stream turned out to be Costa Rican rodeo (bulls not horses, in case anyone is a closet rodeo fan)!!! Not a tennis ball in sight!

Harriet lost 2 and 1. As with the tournament in Mexico, 2 wins and then a loss in a match that looked winnable, on paper at least. In fact even though Harriet was ranked below Flink historically, shes well above her opponent on the latest ranking lists, as some of the Russians best results at the end of 2011 were discarded. I'm not sure that going on to Australia for a much more competitive grade 1 and then the grade A Grand Slam itself makes much sense on this kind of form. The GB boys seem to have been persuaded to stay away, perhaps Harriet may do likewise this year.

Last year I think they only streamed the evening matches (1.15am or so GMT), so that would be the time to check if they are prepared to show any tennis (it's football at the moment, so the excitement isn't restricted to rodeo smile) - however Harriet plays today earlier on another court. Varvara outranks Harriet in both ITF and WTA rankings without having an outstanding record in either, so looks to be the sort of player she will need to beat to make the top 50. Both Harriet and Alex progressed in doubles

Boys R2

Jordi Arconada (ARG) d. (11) Alexander Sendegeya (GBR) 6-0 7-6 (2)
