RE: Andy's schedule for 2013

Here's the relevant section in the ATP rankings FAQ:

Q. What are the requirements and rules for player participation for an ATP World Tour 500 tournament?

A. Top 30 players (based on 2012 year-end Emirates ATP Rankings) must play a minimum of four 500 level tournaments during the calendar year, including at least one event following the US Open (Monte Carlo Masters 1000 event will count towards the minimum of four and all penalties apply):
-- A 0-pointer for each event less than four played.
-- A 0-pointer for withdrawing from any 500 tournament after the acceptance list is out.
-- A 0-pointer for not playing at least one event after the US Open.
-- A 0-pointer can be appealed by a player to the same tribunal formed to hear 1000 suspension appeals.
-- No suspensions or fines (including no withdrawal and late withdrawal fines).

Thanks for that. However I suspect he will still play at least 3 ATP 500s (+ Monte Carlo) as there does seem to be considerable pressure on the players to meet their commitments.

Monte Carlo still counts as a 500 doesn't it? And Andy seems to like going there so I'd iimagine it'll be on his schedule this year.
He also likes the Far East swing so Tokyo could well be repeated.
That leaves 2 to do.

Since he's going to the States for February perhaps he'll take a WC into Acapulco and give Rafa a game.

FWIW I think he's better off spending Feb training in the USA with Ivan. And he could choose to play Memphis.
Delray Beach has been mentioned by Andy as a possibility too since it's up the road from his training camp.

Tokyo or Beijing seems to be a given. The other two are less clear. Basel or Valencia are possible (especially if he intends to be "injured" for Paris). Other options are less clear. No way is he going to Acapulco to play on clay in February and Memphis is also unlikely (why play Indoor to prepar for IW and Miami?). Hamburg is out of the question and I think Washington highly unlikely (he likes his long break after Wimbledon). Assuming that he doesn't play Dubai (or take a late WC into Rotterdam) that just leaves Barcelona.

It is now confirmed that Andy hasn't entered any events in February so unless he asks for a wild card somewhere he won't play between the Australian Open and Indian Wells, which starts on March 7th.

I'm all for training blocks, but that is a long time without a competitive game.

I don't think that I like Andy going "missing" for so long at this time of the year. He has history of effectively admitting he hasn't used the time that effectively.

However, he did seem very positive after this year's Aussie Open, so I trust better this year.

I think he might be grateful though for a decent draw for the first couple of rounds at Indian Wells.

Bad news for Bob in Spain. Andy hasn't entered Barcelona so looks unlikely to meet his commitment of playing 4 ATP 500 events (or 3 + Monte Carlo). The only way he can do so is if he plays Washington or Hamburg, the later being very, very unlikely.

However his website has now added entry into the Paris masters.

Thanks for cheering me up - NOT.

At least I have my tickets for Madrid again this year.  Let's hope Andy doesn't pull out injured like last year.

I wonder if Andy might take a WC into Barcelona, especially if he doesn't penetrate deep into Monte Carlo?

Does participation in the DC count to 500commitment or does one still have to play 4 tourneys and ifDC points are higher they supersede worst of 4 500 points?

Davis Cup doesn't count towards 500 commitment. In any case he could only get 15 points from the Davis Cup this year.

Come on Murray get yourself up off the floor and off to Bacelona.

I rather doubt Andy is on the floor, but rather putting in extensive work so as to do better in Madrid.

There are no doubt arguements for playing in Barcelona, but he and his team have chosen the work away outwith tournaments route.

The Nole/Rafa final yesterday really demonstrated Andy's weakness on Clay. To really be able to challenge he must find a way to turn this weakness into a strength, as with at least 5500 points available he'll never reach his goal of being number 1 without cracking the nut. I don't know how he does that, and (hopefully) he may prove me wrong when he plays in Madrid and Rome, but I can;t see him challenging Nole, Rafa (or indeed Ferrer, Federer and others) this year.

Also, I may be wrong but he's very precious about the tournaments he enters - Ferrer is older than Andy and plays many more tourneys, perhaps he shouldn't be so precious about exceeding his minimum quota and play more matches in lower grade Tournaments (250s) on Clay?  They're pretty much available throughout the year.

McEnroe, Becker and Sampras all managed to be #1 ranked for a long time without ever being truly comfortable on clay - the never won the FO, but were competitive on clay similar to Andy.

Very much disagree with you on Andy doing a Ferrer, although he is perhaps overdoing the caution on his schedule. I think Ferrer is very aware that he doesn't have the talent of the big 4, so can't afford to be as picky - he's never been past a Grand Slam semi, which says it all. And I remember either 1 or 2 years ago when Ferrer won the Paris Masters in the week before the World Tour Finals in London, where almost all the big 8 were either injured, or found ways to lose easily in the first or second rounds to "save" themselves - it was farcical, and extremely annoying for the excellent organising team at Bercy.......Ferrer was completely spent for the WTFs, and beaten at will by all the big guns.
