Unfortunately Jonny O'Mara lost his first round match 3-6 7-5 4-6 against the American Kerznerman.
So that means only Luke and Jazzi made it through the first round (2 from 6), which is a little underwhelming. I hope this was just a warm-up for the Orange Bowl.
Both girls have done well but it is disappointing not to get 2 boys through. In the next round Luke should be too strong for his Swedish opponent but Jazzi has her biggest test to date, against the world no. 62 who ousted the seeded Makarova. Nevertheless the Indonesian's other recent results give hope for Jazzi making it 22 straight victories in junior ITFs
Boys R2
(Q) Gustav Hansson (SWE) v (11) Luke Bambridge (GBR)
A reversal of fortunes for the girls in the doubles; Katy made it through but Jazzi is out.
Will be very interesting to see how Jazzi gets on tomorrow. She has had a remarkable run of victories which has generated a bit of excitement about her, and she certainly needs matches against higher calibre opposition. I don't know enough about juniors to know how much of a step up it is from Grade 3s to Grade 1s.
She won't stick with clay. The LTA have made a concerted effort to push promising juniors onto the clay more to develop their all around game. See Eleanor Dean before injury.
She also trains out of the famous academy in Barcelona, which Andy used for a while during his teenage years, only clay courts I assume.
I'm looking forward to seeing how she gets on with a step up in competitor today - we all have to remember its a 14 year old against a good 17 year old (who was ranked 42 juniors recently), so a good display would be a VERY good sign indeed.
Philip: one thing I find a little odd still, and you might have more intel than me.
Obviously Andy trained at Sanchez Casal (didn't do him any harm).
And recently Judy Murray also encouraged one of her very best young Scottish prospects Ross-Tiree Wilson to head off there now he's 15 (with some support from local Lottery winners and community). This despite her now being formally part of the LTA firmament.
I just read that Jazzi's dad is one of the head coaches within the GB Tennis/LTA set up, and yet he's also decided to send her off to Sanchez Casal as well.
Obviously great weather, clay courts and a big tennis culture are more a Spanish phenomenon than a British one. But if 2 of the key coaching people within the LTA are sending their very best prospects off to Barcelona (and clearly you always do what's best for family and friends), doesn't it imply that they don't have the confidence in development programmes available in the UK, whether LTA backed, LTA recommended or outside the system.
L32: (11) Luke Bambridge (GBR) d. (Q) Gustav Hansson (SWE) 7-6 6-4
Solid result. And a fairly decent run of the draw, given he was seeded 11. L16 will be against the lowest possible (8th) seed or an unseeded player. QF would be against the lowest possible (4th) seed or an unseeded/lower seeded player. The number 2 seed has been knocked out, who would likely have been his opponent in the SF.

Difficult one to answer, no doubt IMO the NTC setup has improved, better coaching etc., etc., but playing outdoors on high quality claycourts in a competitive enviroment at a world renowned tennis academy is probably still just the better option. But its still horses for courses, one option might suit an individual more than it would do for someone else. For example would the Bollitieri route have suited Laura as much as it did Hev ? Probably not.
Jazzi won first set 6-1 but then lost out 4 and 3. Still a very encouraging performance in her first G1 against a much older and higher ranked opponent
The good news: I was flicking through the live streams to see if I could spot Jay Clarke's match, and I am 99% certain I found it, having google imaged his opponent, and made a double match!!
The bad news - I joined it in the middle of what was clearly the final set, and from the body language Jay was at least break up, and I watched him lose his serve twice with a string of unforced errors. His loss in 3 sets now confirmed on the Eddie Herr website, 4-6 in the third.
The really sad bit is that (if it is him, and I really think it is) he's still sitting in his chair by the courtside some 20-25 minutes after the match finished, his opponent long gone, just staring into space with 1 or 2 people behind him with some words of comfort. Tragic.
Pity about Jay and Aswin. Although I admit I didn't see events unfold with Jay like korriban did, I think "tragic" might be a bit far. Anyway, I hope he will take something out of it that helps him in a similar position again.
And obviously pity about Luke too.
