Boys & Girls: Eddie Herr International Championships - Grade A (Week 48)

Some of the kids admittedly look young, but others look pretty big for U16s/U14s. Is there a source confirming which stream is which, and what is and isn't being shown. thanks

I think I'm answering my own question - just seen from the ITF site that the tournament is on clay, and the streams certainly don't look like clay to me! So Maza is correct (never in doubt). Shame!F

Maybe we might see Jay Clarke at some point in the U14s - saw him and his family at the WTF Finals and wished him luck at the time - never seen him play though.

We have quite a few decent players missing - Edmund, Boulter, Ashley, Dean, Dart etc. Would the LTA have encouraged participation here or is it purely individual choice?

Good news about Jazzi Plews - she came from behind to win 2-6 6-1 6-4. No doubt her opponent will be feeling Grimm about that result (too obvious a pun to resist)!

Apart from Jay there's also Aswin Lizen seeded in the 16s and Chelsea Samways, though the draws for the under 12s - under 16s look smaller than usual, so I doubt the strength of these events will match the Junior Orange Bowl.

The first results are through, and there's a good win for Jazzi, against a player who beat Harriet en route to a Grade 3 title in September (but lost to Katy in a Grade 2 semi later in the month). I think that's the highest ranked player that Jazzi has beaten, despite her being lower ranked (148)

L64: Jazzi PLEWS d. Chiara GRIMM (SUI) 2-6 6-1 6-4

Eleanor Dean is still entered for next week's orange bowl. Kyle seems to be doing well enough at Futures lately, so maybe he has decided to concentrate there rather than on juniors.

A bit of both. Kyle is concentrating on transition and I would not expect to see him playing more junior events other than Grand Slams (plus or minus a warm-up). The other 4 all entered but withdrew. Katie, Peter and Harriet have all played quite a bit recently, and are also out of the Orange Bowl. Eleanor hasn't played since July, but is still down for next week.

Jay won his U14 first round match 6-1 6-2.

Still 3 U18 boys matches outstanding today.

Responding to an earlier post - I would not have expected Kyle to bother with Eddie Herr and the Orange Bowl, given how well he's started with futures. I would expect him only to play the Grand Slams and perhaps a single warm-up event before each of them, perhaps not even all 4. At this point, with such a high ranking already, he's unlikely to need JE status, so juniors will be more about the prestige of the Grand Slams and gaining useful media/sponsor exposure. Shame about some of the missing girls - probably more of a fatigue/end of season decision.

The doubles pairings are quite interesting. All of them appear to be UK/US partnerships: Jazzi Plews is with Tornado Ali Black; Katy Dunne with Christina Makarova; and Luke Bambridge with MacKenzie McDonald (not sure I've got the spelling right) -- in both Ms Dunne's and Mr Bambridge's case the result is a very high seeding (5 and 2 respectively).

NB: Ms Makarova appears to have lost her first round match, so will have more time to concentrate on doubles. Zootennis' account of the first day focuses on the match-up between Maria Shishkina and Belinda Bencic. The girls' 18s look really strong this year.

Girls

L64: Katy DUNNE [12] vs (Q) Olga IANCHUK (UKR)
L64: Jazzi PLEWS d. Chiara GRIMM (SUI) 2-6 6-1 6-4

Boys

L64: Rishab AGARWAL (IND) d. Alexander SENDEGEYA 6-1 1-6 7-5
L64: Pedro CACHIN [14] (ARG) d. Evan HOYT 6-3 6-4
L64: Luke BAMBRIDGE d. Naoki NAKAGAWA (JAP) 6-1 4-6 6-2
L64: (Q) Daniel KERZNERMAN (USA) v Jonny O'MARA

Not a good draw for Katy - her opponent is top 500 WTA. Jonny's opponent has a good W-L record in juniors.
Aswin won his opener in the under 16s but Chelsea went out in the under 14s

Tornado and Jazzi - if they play well together, and end up as a doubles team on the tour, or play each other in big matches on the tour - what a commentators, tabloid headline writers or marketers dream!!

Very tough draw for Katy - opponent barely bothers with juniors, preferring the seniors. Ranking of 453 includes a $25k SF 6 months ago and 2 $10k wins in a row in the last month. Gulp! This match really ought to be absolute carnage....this is the type of "sleeper" player every big seed wants to avoid!

Decent looking performance overall from Katy, looking at her opponent's senior ranking and results, if rather bizarre scoreline.
