The quartet who played the Japan Grade 2 last week have benefited from reasonably kind first round draws, though Katie Boulter's opponent upset a seed last week. Harriet Dart has a rematch from last week.
R2: Anna BROGAN vs Hikari YAMAMOTO [7] (JPN) 71 R2: Katy DUNNE vs Da Hei KIM (KOR) 192 R2: Harriet DART vs Zoe HIVES (AUS) 191 R2: Katie BOULTER vs Mineri SUKEGAWA (JPN) 891
Katie's opponent is ranked 891 but did beat the 6th seed in R1. Anna's opponent has a SF at G2 & B1 but has a lot of her points from doubles, and lost to Katy at Roehampton.
A good day and a step up in opponent for all four next. Zoe Hives did very well for the Aussies in the junior Fed Cup, so may pose a big threat to Harriet
Pretty much as expected. Okuno beat Katie's conqueror Kalinina to win the Grade 2 last week, while Katy needs to win again to defend her points from last year, and has the draw to do so.
One more (singles) win for Katy to enter the top 50. Her opponent has a good record, but not outstanding for a top 50 player. If successful she will have to play a star junior in the semis - either Indy De Vroome or top seed Katerina Siniakova
It was even more bizarre according to the ITF: "Poor Indy De Vroome of the Netherlands was forced to pull out of the tournament altogether - in singles and doubles - when she was struck down with the bug..... She and partner Kanami Tsuji (JPN) were also forced to forfeit their doubles quarter-final, only to see their quarter-final opponents, Ching-Wen Hsu (TPE) and Anhelina Kalinina (UKR) withdraw after Hsu also suffered stomach problems."
Hence both teams pulled out of the quarter-finals, with neither of them given a w/o
The outcome is the best results in a Grade A (singles and doubles) for girls since Heather Watson in 2009. Katy lost to Katerina in a Grade 2 final last year, and the Czech has won a Grade A (Trofeo Bonfiglio) already this year.
No further joy, though the doubles final was much closer than last week, against the same pair. As a result Katy will move into the top 50 and has almost certainly done enough to secure direct entry into the first 3 slams next year (possibly all 4), which will give her the option of concentrating on the Pro Circuit if she wants to without jeopardising her chance to play in Slams

The guy who filmed this has also filmed part of the doubles final too (I just kept on clicking until I found it as all of the video titles are in Japanese).
