Week 41 - ATP Masters 1000 - Shanghai

R1:  (3) Andy Murray vs BYE

****

R2:  (3) Andy Murray vs Bernard Tomic (AUS) or Florian Mayer (GER)

Assuming they both get that far, he'll face John Isner (6) in the QF.

Fed's back in action as the top seed here &, therefore, in Andy's half of the draw, so a potential semi-final opponent.

A choice between a couple of fairly unorthodox players for his first match, then. The H2H of both is 2:1 in Andy's favour.

L32: (3) Andy Murray WR 3 v Florian Mayer (GER) WR 25 (CH 18 in 2011)

Mayer just beat Tomic 4 & 0! Andy won their only previous match, in Rome last year, by 2 breadsticks to 1.

Andy's potential QF opponent John Isner beat Kevin Anderson in a not totally unexpected scoreline of :   7 - 6 (3)   6 - 7 (8)   7 - 6 (7)

45 aces ( 24 Isner, 21 Anderson ), no breaks of service ( though 7 BPs in all, 4 - 3 to Isner ) and Isner saved 3 MPs in the final set TB  ( the final set TB that all singles matches in all tournaments should have  wink )

The match is tomorrow, not before 11am UK time. Yay! I'll be able to watch this time without getting up at stupid o'clock.

Yeah, Mayer out with a wrist injury.

Odd - I've seen a couple of places saying he had a rib injury?

confuse

Beyond The Baseline @SI_BTBaseline

.@RobKoenigTennis says Mayer citing a rib injury. Too bad. That should have been a fun match. #atp

Reeltime was in too much of a rush this morning to add that he hoped it was nothing too serious   smile

Anyway bye and W/O into the last 16 of a Masters. Andy's first match is for 180 points. I think he gets the 90 points OK ( if he was to lose in R3 ), I mean not his fault and he would have been favourite to beat Mayer anyway, but there is something gnawing at the back of my mind about such situations   confuse

Re Andy's now ( one presumes ) first match. Dolgopolov has won the first set  6 -3  against Simon.

I really wanted to watch that match, and I don't have another clear morning this week! Ah well, Andy gets a bit more rest. I thought he was looking tired in Tokyo.

 He's just polished off Simon (15) by 3 & 4 in only 1¼ hours!

And "Ugly Mug" has just dumped out Gasquet by 4 & 4, which means that Andy & Isner are the only seeds left in the second quarter of the draw!

A couple of interesting results in the third quarter:  Baggy saw off the Canadian Boy Wonder in three tie-breaks (= 2¾ hours!) & Sam Querrey accounted for Nishikori in three sets (2-6 6-1 6-4). disbelief

Perhaps they are all tired out from playing their last tournament - didn't Baggy, Nishikori and Raonic all get to semis and beyond in Tokyo?

They did.  In fact, Nishikori beat Raonic to bag the title (6-0 in the third)! wink
