Your theory sounds quite plausible, Steven. What I can't understand is why the ATP website doesn't have up to date info.

I'm also pretty confident he'll have to play someone in R1.

No idea what's right anymore ...

The BBC are now reporting that Andy plays his first match in Tokyo against Lacko having been given a Bye in R1 after Monfils withdrew.  ESPN are sayng the same apparently and so is something called "Andy's blog on twitter" (which I don't know about). If anyone finds out what what's I'd be glad to know.

For what it's worth, Sky & The Times of India are also confirming that a recurrence of a knee injury has forced Monfils to withdraw ...

Now I don't know whether to get up early tomorrow or not! The ATP AND the Tokyo site both still have him down as playing Monfils.

Definitely Monfils is out, he is on his way back to France. The question now is, is Andy playing somebody or getting a bye into R2? It sounds from Steven's post that he will be playing somebody.  Maybe they will persuade one of the ballboys to stand in . . .

He will play somebody. If Karlovic shows up to sign in as luckly loser it will be him. If he doesn't the dirty German cheat is next in line and since he is playing doubles he will almost certainly sign in.

And it will indeed be Karlovic, it's on the livescores now though he hasn't started yet.

Drat. Andy had break points at 3 all, but Karlovic managed to ace them away.

5 all. Andy is getting more points against the serve than Karlovic, so hopefully if it goes to a tiebreak Andy can edge it.

And now it is indeed a tiebreak.

Apparently Andy went off for treatment on his lower back at the change of ends. Hopefully it is just the first-match-after-a-break niggles. Seems to be ok, though, it is 3 all in the second set.

Andy breaks just at the right time to take the match 7-6(7) 6-4.

Ivo served 18 aces and still couldn't get a set.

Was always going to be an awkward first match back so good that he got through. Lacko up next shouldn't be a problem, before winning his first round this week he hadn't won a match since Wimbledon. He is no doubt haunted by his savage Davis Cup beating at the hands of Evo wink

Andy beat Lacko at the US Open in 2010 for the loss of just 7 games.
