RE: Boys: US Open 2012 - Grade A (Week 36)

Kyle's first set goes to a tiebreak - no breakpoints yet, but the Japanese boy's service games have been held more easily
Josh 3-2*

Kyle capitalises on his momentum and breaks to 15 in the opening game of the second

Maybe his results do not suggest it, but I have got a feeling that Joshua is going to handle the transition to the senior game well. He's a powerful lad and with the right coaching he might just surprise a few people. It is lovely having so many good young players on the mens side at the moment.

This post is obviously the cue for the three game loss, so in the spirit of reverse psychology.  He is not going to do anything and would be advised to go home.

lets hope it works biggrin

He has the physique to make an impact, though up to now he has impressed much more on the doubles court than in singles. However the transition will probably be a long one, given he has signed up for the University of Texas

Struggling in set 2:  Josh 0-3*

Kyle 2*-3

US college tennis could well be a good move.  There are a lot of good players there.  He can take his early steps without the whole irrational press/public reaction to young british tennis players.  The fortnightly myopia that surrounds Wimbledon, leading to everything else getting ignored.  Plus being from Nottingham, they won't dress him up as Robin Hood after one quali win at Wimbledon. A slow burner I think.

Kyle wins 7-6(5) 6-4 converting his second matchpoint

His likely R3 opponent is second seed Filip Peliwo, though he has been taken to 3 sets by Kalovelonis

I haven't had the opportunity to see Josh play although I did get excellent first hand reports from Jonny Rigby's mum !!  Incidently Jonny is another who has just taken up a scholarship at South Illinois Unversity.

However, I did have the pleasure of seeing Kyle play at the start of this year (in Murcia) where he played Mark Vervoort (WR 855) and beat him 6-0 6-4.  The second set was a hard fought set, but in the opening set Kyle completely took him apart.  That was enough to show me that when his game is "on", he has the type of weapons to challenge much more experienced opponents.  Kyle is definitely one who will make a good transition to the senior game.  Infact, with his results so far this year, he has already begun to do so.

P.S.  I thought I would wait until he won before singing his praises.  Didn't want to put the mockers on him !!

Go Kyle
