With 4 direct entries (Liam Broady, Kyle Edmund, Josh Ward-Hibbert and Luke Bambridge) Evan Hoyt needs to win 2 matches starting today to join them. His opener looks very winnable, though his opponent did beat Peter Ashley earlier in the year.
It transpired to be a very close match. Hopefully having survived that he will up his game against a superficially stronger opponent in final qualifying. Live scores on the US Open site, with Evan's match the second on court P11 (the first started at 3)pm BST
The main draw is out, and Kyle appears to have the toughest draw, considering both his first round opponent (a rapidly rising 1996, who beat Liam at Roland Garros) and that his next seed should be Filip Peliwo. The wildcard facing Luke looks quite useful, with an ATP ranking close to a 1000. Liam is in the same section as Thiago Monteiro, who is the highest ATP ranked player (415)
R1 (L64)
Luke Bambridge (GBR) v (WC) Harrison Adams (USA) Ct 8 match 1 (Q) Jose Anton Salazar Martin (ESP) v (13) Liam Broady (GBR) Ku Keon Kang (KOR) v (12) Josh Ward-Hibbert (GBR) Ct 12 match 2 (14) Noah Rubin (USA) v Kyle Edmund (GBR)
Nicely done by Ward-Hibbert. Unfortunate for Kyle Edmund: Noah Rubin is a good player; he is John McEnroe's protege; and he is New York based. But given that Edmund is also good and that both Broady and Ward-Hibbert beat Rubin at Eastbourne (though that was on grass), who knows?
The top quarter of the doubles draw looks exceptionally tough: whoever emerges from that into the QFs should be very match-fit indeed.
