RE: Boys: Canadian Open Junior Championships - Grade 1 (Week 35)

Liam wins 5 points in a row to break for *6-5, Peliwo may regret that show off drop shot at 40-0!!

Liam took advantage of Peliwo's tiredness to get what had seemed an unlikely win after losing 8 games in a row. He will therefore have the chance tomorrow to emulate Marcus Willis, who won the title in 2008. The finals start at 7pm BST tomorrow, but I don't know whether the Boys or Girls will be first

Fair play to Liam for sticking in there but frankly Peliwo lost the match rather than Liam winning it. Peliwo got to *4-0 in the third and then completely fell apart, the only game he won from there was largely down to some very poor errors from Liam.

If he does win, we can only hope that will be the only bit of Marcus's career he emulates - a prime example, if one was needed, that junior success does not necessarily translate into a wildly successful career as a pro.

Whatever the circumstances, beating Peliwo "at home" constitutes an extremely impressive win. Well done.

Marcus didn't have a junior record which marked him out as a strong candidate for a successful pro career - the Canadian Open was his only Grade 1 (or above) singles title which boosted him to a career high of 15 right at the end of his spell, whereas Liam has achieved much more at an earlier stage - and hopefully will transfer that over time to the pro stage. You are right of course though that only a proportion of even the very top juniors make a successful transition

Against convention they are playing the Boys final first (streamed via the link on page 2) at 7pm BST - presumably because the girls' final is an all-Canadian affair between Zhou and Abanda. Liam's semi can be viewed by picking match 11 from the recorded options.

Final underway, but not going well for Liam as Kyrgios leads 5*-2

The Aussie was too strong. Liam got one break back when Kyrgios served for it at 5-2 but promptly dropped serve (not helped by a couple of doubles)

Final

(3) Nick Kyrgios (AUS) d. (7) Liam Broady (GBR) 6-2 6-3
