Week 35-36: US Open - Hard

"Deliciano" was made to work for his berth in the third round by his compatriot, Pablo Andújar:  if I've done the maths correctly, it took him four & a quarter hours to subdue him in five sets!  For the record, the head-to-head is 6-0 in Andy's favour...

Yes, nice of the Spaniards to tire each other out! That 6-0 includes a thrashing (for the loss of just 7 games) in the same round at the US Open last year.

Point at *2-1 30-30 in third set was something else !!
If Andy can back up this performance with another good one on Saturday I believe he's back on track.

Klizan has knocked Tsonga out in 4 sets! terrible for the BOTB, but great for Andy hopefully!

That means Cilic is now Andy's most likely QF opponent.

According to Greg, Andy was really striking the ball well in practice today.

Slightly off topic but a result from today that is worth a mention. Lleyton Hewitt beat Gilles Muller in a 5 set match that lasted over 4 and half hours. Got to hand it to him, after all these years and all the injury problems very few people would still want to be out there playing matches of that length.

Lopez is a danger if he serves well but Andy simply has to handle him at this point

What a point at BP down with them both looking out of it at one stage, so  6 - 5 *

One of the next two game

Just listening on radio, but it sounds as if something's wrong. Are those who can see able to illuminate? Can't remember a recent match where he was having so much trouble returning ....

Oh, phew. I don't know what was happening (didn't like the discussion on the BBC feed, which seemed too dismissive) ... but champions win even when things are bad ... so more power to him!

It looked to me as though the heat had got to him and there was no energy left in his legs. 4th set he would come to life for brief spells. He was lucky that Lopez chose to take risks as that gave Andy his chance, attacking the net at 5-4 presented Murray with the opportunity to hit a superb backhand pass, then an attempted drop shot at mp, failed to get over the net.

I just caught saw the last 2 and a half sets on stream. He didn't appear at all injured really to me ( as Miriambee said no rubbing of effected parts, which he is normally never slow to do ), but his movement around the ball was certainly awful at times, like just playing it from where he stood rather than move his feet to play the ball positively and well correctly !  And he was so passive.

Virtually looked ready to fall over after some shots that he missed, but that slumping is just generally a rather annoying habit he has, particularly when he is in one of his more passive days.

Difficult to know how this seeming lethargy was effected by the heat, but yes as Milo suggetred he did appear more engaged come the conclusion and hit through the ball a bit more.

Difficult to know whether to hope it was more  a physical problem ( in which case hope it doesn't effect him further ) or mental ( would be very disappointing as I really thought he had learned to be more positive in both his play and his body language ).  I tend to think a bit of both, that the heat certainly had some effect on him ( as I say he did not appear at all injured ), but I am afraid to me some also looked mental.

Anyway Lopez won more points ( 162 to 154 ), played many more points on Andy's serve ( 170 to 146 ) and won quite a higher % of return points ( 34% to 26% ), so it was a rather good one to win given that.  Big chance missed today by Lopez, who took some wrong options at important moments, thankfully !

We've been here before with Andy. having a very poor one for whatever reasons, and he has regrouped, but he could very much have done without such a long match in that heat.
