ATP week 33 - Cincinnati Masters 1000 (hard)

IF Andy plays - and that is in some doubt - he has got a pretty nasty draw compared to some of the other top 4. He is seeded to meet:

R1 - Bye

R2 - Melzer or Querrey

R3 -  Roddick

QF - Del Potro, though Isner is in that section too

SF - Djokovic

F - Federer

He usually does well against big servers, though.

Andy is on the main court today, 3rd match on Center. (American spelling deliberate ) Maybe 8pm or so UK time, depending on how long the two earlier matches run.

He will be playing Sam Querrey: H2H 4-1 in favour of Andy, though Sam won their last encounter in the 2010 LA final. If I remember correctly, Andy entered that tournament, which had not been on his schedule, just after his split with Miles MacLagan. Provided his knee is ok Andy should manage this, he usually does well against big servers, but Querrey is certainly in good form at the moment so it may not be straightforward.

Re the knee - I saw a picture floating about the internet somewhere of him with Andy Ireland, and his knee was taped up. Hopefully that is just a precaution.

Querrey no doubt is a nasty draw, but one I would expect Andy to come through, assuming of course his mental and physical state allow it.

Andy playing a very efficient match so far, clearly in Querrey's head.

Andy wins 6-2 6-4. A nice, stress-free match - except for Big Sam, who looked bewitched, bothered and bewildered at times.

Chardy next (he's a lucky loser here).

And it is second match on Grandstand, after a WTA match starting at 4pm UK time. So, as the WTA is Aggie Radwanska against a USA wild card which may not take long, any time after 5pm I guess.

Andy's match has just started, early in the first set (*2-2). Sloane put up a good fight against ARad, so it's later than some might have expected.

Yep Sloane nearly beat Aga.

Andy not having it all his own way as of yet.

Dreadful first set from Andy which he lost 6-4.

Served fairly well but everything else well, well below par.

Oh dear, not at all what I wanted to see. And the second set going no better 4-2 down.

Yes, that was unexpected. Chardy is always dangerous when he is on - but he doesn't often keep the level up long enough. Today he did, and combined with Andy playing a bit of a shocker, we see the result. He is going to lose an awful lot of points - 910!
