I can't see it being that bad. He picked up the injury yesterday during the second set and played another 5 games without too many problems. I assume he just wants some proper hard court practice before playing again. It is sensible not to take risks before the US Open.

Is it just the usual change of surface problem with the knee and so a convenient way of withdrawing from a tournament which comes too quickly after his heroics at the Olympics ?
Not surprised, more surprised he even started to play this week. Best resting IMHO.
He had nothing to lose from playing, and actually will have gained 80 points for his ranking by doing so (he lost first round last time) instead of taking a 0 for the year. When a (hopefully) niggling little injury appeared withdrawing is sensible to prepare for a real challenge in Cincy where he is defending winners points. In fact I'd say it's worked out pretty well indeed for him - assuming it really is just a little surface change niggle and not a serious knee injury.

Pretty sensible really, pick up 80 easy points, and don't bother playing the guy who is really going to push your body
The decision is looking even better - there is still no play in Toronto, except for doubles which have been moved indoors. It was almost certainly going to mean having to play 2 matches on at least one day if not two, because the forecast for tomorrow is dreadful as well. Get the knee sorted Andy and come back strong in Cinci - a lot of points to defend there.
In his 1-2-1 press conference with the organisers, shown during (surprise surprise) a Jankovic injury time out at the Montreal event, he said it was not the knee that previously has, and continues to, give him trouble.
Because it was a new symptom, even though he'd warmed up on the bike in the morning, they were just being very cautious about things.
