RE: Week 31: Olympic tennis - Wimbledon (grass ;) ) - singles

Did anyone else here Andrew Castle's brilliant comment that "Sport is taking place all over this city".

Just where would we be with out such fantastic insight, just how could we cope with out someone explaining that the Olympic Games entails the playing of much sport across the host city?

I'm so exhausted, I feel as though I had played the match myself. Brilliant from Andy, he was in difficulties a few times, but pulled through with sheer grit and determination (oh, and some very good tennis as well).

I'm nervous about the mixed - Fed has a whole day to relax and recover, if Andy is to go with the mixed I think he would have to play two matches tomorrow.

Lets put it like this. I wouldn't be that unhappy to see him and Laura get beat in their first match tomorrow.

In normal circumstances mixed doubles is irrelevant, but this is the Olympics and a medal is a medal. They also have a decent shot, playing a spot of mixed where most of the shots are going to be directed at Laura, shouldn't be too taxing physically and might be quite relaxing enabling him to take his mind off Sunday. Also there is no 3rd set. He would probably practice a little bit tomorrow anyway. We shall see tomorrow what his mindset is, whether he gives 100%.

That was amazing.....the coolest thing I heard (over here not sure if you got the same interview) was John Mac's interview saying that he hopes Andy will beat Fed on Sunday.....kinda cool that John Mac is always pulling for the Brits!

I hope they go for it.  Totally agree with the above most shots will be hit at Laura and this is the Olympics and this means the world to Andy.  Team GB have an amazing chance to win a medal and if Andy could double up I am sure he would.  Also, Fed must be super sore and think of what a medal would do to Laura's career....I am hoping they win twice on Saturday and play for the mixed gold too!

maybe, but we havent heard him commentate for Swiss TV!

seen Thorpe on the BBC Swimming coverage, he's have to put his game face on supporting the brits :)

great win by andy though, you could really see how much it means.

Final is over 5 sets isn't it? you wonder if 3 sets might have been better for andy.

Obviously a final over 3 sets would suit Andy but I am glad that it is over 5 because it gives the match so much more meaning. Andy has already beaten Federer in many a three set match, even in Masters Series finals, doing so again the Olympic final wouldn't prove anything, either to himself or to his critics. Winning over 5 sets, especially when Federer clearly wants it badly, would be huge step in his quest to win a his first Grand Slam. It could do for his career what the Davis Cup win did for Djokovic.

I rather think that beating Djokovic in straights in the semi will do nice things for his career. His play was dominant, and it must help his confidence level. Can't think of a time when he's beaten one of the other three in straights for something that REALLY mattered (by which I mean GS or Olympics) ... though if he has, I know there will be someone (or several someones) on the board who can supply the occasion!

Great win but I am still not convinced that he beats 2 of the big 3 in semis and the final when they both are best of five. Id take a gold though.

Tomorrows ITF published schedule of play makes no sense at all whatsoever!

Centre Court

12:00 - Women's Doubles - Gold Medal Match
HLAVACKOVA / HRADECKA (CZE) [4] V WILLIAMS / WILLIAMS (USA)

Not before 14:00 - Men's Singles - Gold Medal Match
Roger FEDERER (SUI) [1] V Andy MURRAY (GBR) [3]

Mixed Doubles - Gold Medal Match
AZARENKA / MIRNYI (BLR) [1] V ROBSON / MURRAY (GBR)

So, why are the Murray matches scheduled back-to-back?

I presume it's all about the previously advertised times, and broadcasters prerogatives or agendas.

Surely a more logical schedule would be Mens, Womens, Mixed?

I was wondering the same thing. Maybe they thought that they had to start the main event at 14.00, and having that and then two dubs might go on too late?

It can be explained in three letters: NBC

American TV stations should be banned from broadcasting all tennis events.

Andy will get a minimum of 90 minutes rest after the singles before he has to play the mixed, will be a long day for sure.
