Week 20 - Rome Masters 1000 - Red Clay

L32: (4) Andy Murray WR 4 v David Nalbandian (ARG) WR 43 (CH 3 in 2006) or Qualifier

(16) Gasquet, Melzer, Davydenko or (WC) Lorenzi could await the winner in R3

(8) David Ferrer and (11) Gilles Simon are the other seeds in Andy's quarter

(2) Rafael Nadal is the top seed in his half

A bit of a minefield, to say the least!

Not an easy draw, but then there aren't many of them at this level. And Andy sometimes seems to make a hows-yer-father of what seems an easy draw anyway.

Fingers crossed.

Nalbandian is one of those players - like Hewitt and Ferrer - where you wonder how the hell they do it.

He has no "weapons" (sorry to use that ghastly cliche), he's noticeably overweight, and he doesn't seem to give a damn. In spite of that, he's been at the top of the game for what seems like forever.

My money's on him to beat Andy. Or it would be if I was sad enough to do betting.

My fictional money is on Andy.  Out of interest why do you call betting "sad" ?

He ain't doing too badly at the moment:  served for 5-0, only to be broken to love, but he broke again, held to love & took the first set by 6-1. wink

Lowlights of second set :  42% of first serves in, 20% ( 5 / 25 ) return points.

The crowds in Rome are - as always - ridiculously low. There seemed to be about 20 people watching Tsonga v Troicki.

What's that all about, then?

Andy holds to 15 in the tenth game, then breaks to 30 in the eleventh (squandering two BPs in the process!) & will therefore serve for the match.

Andy breaks for *6-5 with a stone dead net cord at 30-40.
